Healthy Eating - Meal Prep Ideas

If you are like many people, you groan at the thought of doing meal prep. While you know it is something you need to do, it does not mean you like it! Meal prep takes time, but if you look at preparing say your vegetables just once for the whole week, then you will find it easier to eat healthy home-cooked meals each evening. Some foods, some vegetables are easy to prepare ahead of time and save well. There are steps you can take with your meal planning to make the task easier and then you will find you spend less time doing the meal prep and more time enjoying your food!
Let us look at a few meal-prep ideas...
1. One Recipe, Many Variations. Perhaps the most significant time-consuming task with meal prep is trying to figure out what to cook in the first place. You have to hunt down recipes, figure out what will work with your weight loss diet and then purchase all the groceries required. Time-consuming stuff!
Instead, look at finding one recipe offering several variations. For instance, you might make a vegetable stir-fry. You can just alter the vegetables you put in the stir-fry, swap out the chicken for beef as desired, and even change the sauce a little. It is the same meal overall, but with small changes that should be enough to keep you interested in continuing to carry on with your weight loss diet plan.
The more you become accustomed to preparing the same type of meals over and over, the easier it will be to plan your meal prep out for the week.
2. Two Words: Slow Cooker. Slow cooking is super easy, and a method of cooking everyone should get into doing from time to time. Just put all the ingredients in the slow cooker in the morning, turn it on, and by the time you arrive home from work, the food will be ready to serve. Plus, you can make a significantly sized batch, which means you will be eating healthy meals several times during your week.
3. Buy Pre-Chopped Vegetables. The last idea to consider is buying pre-chopped vegetables. Cutting up vegetables is often one job people dislike doing the most, so make it easier for yourself. Buy them ready to go, so there is little to no prep work involved.
While you will pay a little more for pre-chopped vegetables, it is money well spent.
There you have a few ideas to think about using to help make meal prep easier. If you follow these tips, sticking to your weight loss diet will be easier than ever.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Fitness Is About Health and Staying Healthy Is About Good Body Maintenance

Some are born with an inbuilt knowledge of what one's body needs. Others are easily misguided and led by fashion, popularity, and peer pressure into things that should be avoided. There is also the bodies willingness or otherwise to partake of harmful substances. In my case my body could not tolerate chemicals or anything that affected the brain. This was guided by my keen desire for knowledge and making my intelligence number one.
The lessons learned are that what we do when we are young has an impact on aging and on what diseases and handicaps we will face as the years pile up. Good body maintenance is about avoiding anything toxic and that includes even dangerous rides at carnivals.
The latest fad is to take rides on vehicles that cause a drop and sudden stop, as in some crazy fairground roller coaster adventures. Watching one of these recently it was hard for me to believe that people not only put their own bodies at risk but that of their children in the name of having fun. The human brain is soft and very easily damaged.
The body warns of impending danger through the adrenalin glands and the sensation that many find addictive. As adrenalin flows it increases the heart rate and provides us with a flight or fight experience. In other words, it prepares for recovery from harm.
As the body jerks into a sudden stop the cranium and brain collide. This causes a degree of bruising and can even result in death or paralysis. But that doesn't have to happen immediately as delayed response may see the effects of concussion several hours or even a day after the event.
Headaches; nausea; dizziness; memory problems; irritability; as well as balance and sleeping difficulties may follow. Look at these symptoms and compare them to those of Alzheimer's or dementia patients. With the latter there are huge changes in brain functions that include memory loss. While there is no proven correlation to support the linking of the two it doesn't mean it is not correct.
Drugs also affect the brain and taking pills on a regular basis may also be leading to the onset of Alzheimer's or dementia. While there are no studies to prove this is the case it's still a matter of common sense.
If one is looking for a fitness regime then start with the brain and all other things will surely follow. It has the ability to tell us when we are going wrong. Drugs, on the other hand, interfere with that side of nature. We educate the brain by what we do to our bodies. If we stuff ourselves with things like sweets and alcohol, and tell it that the odd adrenalin rush is OK, then changes in that vital organ will impel us to take more of it.

Exercises for Older People Just Starting Out

https://ezinearticles.com/?Exercises-for-Older-People-Just-Starting-Out&id=8916620
We always encourage older people to begin an exercise program, but when they are just starting out it is important to know how to exercise safely. Whoever you are exercising has to meet that person's needs, and obviously by starting a program when at 60 those requirements aren't going to be the same as somebody who is exercising at 30 years old. First, a consultation with a doctor is always recommended just to be informed of what the exercise plan will be.
Then you can get started. This following routine will get your body going if you do them three or four times a week. These are some of the simple exercises that will get you started:
1. Knee lifts. As we age our hips and core can lose some suppleness if we fail to keep them full flexed. Do these by starting with your feet about shoulders apart. With hands on hips put all of your weight on your right foot, bend your left knee toward your chest. After one minute do this with the other leg. This will also be an excellent exercise for balance. To begin you might want to use a hand on the wall for support.
2. Calf raises. This is a great workout for strengthening the calve muscles. While standing with your feet shoulder distance apart, lift up on your toes slowly. Hold that position for a couple of seconds and then drop back down to your heels. Repeat this for one minute. To add intensity as you progress you can carry small weights in your hands. If you want to work on balance do the same motion but only one foot at a time.
3. Step and tap. This is another great exercise for balance, but it is also good for a light aerobics workout. While standing imagine that there is a line on the ground next to you. Step sideways over that line one foot at a time, then when both feet are across that imaginary line step back with each foot. Do this for about one minute at whatever speed feels comfortable for you. As you advance you can bounce back and forth with both feet together.
4. Arm circles. One of the areas that can lock up when not used is the shoulder joints. Like the knees they are big joints and should be exercise regularly to keep that full range of motion you will need as you age. This is a great exercise for keeping the joints supple, and it is to stand with your arms on your side outward in a T-shape with your body. Begin moving your hands in a circular motion, graduate making wider and wider circles with your hands. After one minute makes circles in the opposite direction for a minute. This can be enhanced by holding small weights.
5. Standing crunches. We all know that crunches are great exercises for the abs, but they are quite difficult to do. Standing crunches are easier and will still give the abdominal muscles a workout. With your feet slightly wider than your shoulders lift your left arm above and over your right side until you feel the left side stretch. Bring your left elbow down and crunch to the left and compress your torso as you bring your left knee up. Have the feeling of pinching something between your elbow and knee. After returning to the original position, continue with this again for one minute and then switch sides.
Where you carry your weight has a lot to do with your overall health, as it is a  marker for issues [http://liverissues.com/hypertension-issues/liver-and-kidney/]  having to do with the kidneys and liver. How To Cook Food More Nutritiously

Eating nutritious food is not an option, it's a necessity for a healthy life. With majority of the world's population suffering from one or more kind of nutritional deficiency, it becomes even more important to make sure your food has all the essential nutrients in sufficient quantity.
For a healthy and nutritious diet, you need to cook your meals in the healthiest way possible - by choosing healthy ingredients and cooking it in the healthiest way possible. Here are the steps to cook food nutritiously:
Cook on Medium Heat:
The amount of heat your food cooks at greatly decides its nutritional outcome. Overcooking it would not only deprive your taste buds of the natural tastes but would also destroy delicate nutrients (like complex carbs). It is, thus, advised to cook food at medium heat. It will also prevent it from burning or sticking to the bottom of the cooking pot. Even at medium heat most cookware being made from metals or ceramic (unnatural material) destroy delicate nutrients. Keep reading to find out how this can be fully prevented.
Wash or Rinse foods the right way:
Different foods need to be washed differently to preserve their nutrients. Generally, for most vegetables, it is recommended to wash them right before you cut for those water-soluble nutrients to stay locked in. Avoid soaking your vegetables, as that can remove key nutrients, such as vitamin C.
Don't overcook vegetables:
Overcooking vegetables makes them mushy and they taste quite bland. It's important to cook them for just the right duration so they neither remain uncooked nor overcooked. Cooking for too long also reduces their nutritional value by breaking down the nutrients at molecular level.
Always use the right cookware, it makes a big difference!
The cookware makes a big difference to the health of your food. Most conventional metal and ceramic cookware make food unhealthy by contaminating it with reactive metal toxins and destroying nutrients with their harsh heat. You can make your food way more nutritious by choosing the right cookware - healthy and non-toxic pure-clay pots. Pure clay is naturally inert so doesn't react with food a biochemical entity, and their unique far infrared heat keeps nutrients intact.
Steam management is another important aspect of cooking healthy. Most of the steam generated in food is water-soluble nutrients. Out of the 13 essential vitamins and minerals, 9 are water-soluble, which means they dissolve in water, are quickly used in the body and need to be replenished every day - the body doesn't store them. With conventional cookware, as steam constantly leaves the pot so do the water-soluble nutrients, cooked food remains deficient in one more way.
Pure clay pots can be ergonomically designed to naturally and fully harness the goodness of nature, so the rising steam touches the inner surface of the lid, condense, and drops back into the food instead of exiting the pot like with metals.
By taking care of these little things you can make sure you are cooking your food in the healthiest way possible and your body is getting all the nutrients it needs.
Hi I am Sharon Ray and I enjoyed writing about this natural way of cooking food more nutritiously. Miriam's Earthen Cookware makes these all-natural pure-clay pressure cookers in the USA. Their mission is to provide to the consumer a 100% healthy & green alternative to cooking that has no metals, toxins & other chemical contaminants. I greatly enjoy using them, I hope you can check them out here: https://miriamsearthencookware.com/mec-store/

Best Ways to Lose Fat for Women Over 40 - The truth

Healthier Eating

1. Eat more fruits and veggies
· "Ultimately, the food pyramid recommends a total of nine servings of fruits and vegetables," says Lisa Young, PhD, author of The Portion Teller Plan and adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University. No need to be worried about having to try to eat nine servings a day just start adding these things to your everyday meal. For example, if you eat cereal for breakfast then cut up a banana and put it in there, or even putting spinach on your sandwiches. I practice the "50 percent rule": aim to have half of your lunch or dinner plate covered in veggies. Not only will this help you get your nutrition fix in, but you'll also likely shed some weight because veggies have less calories than other foods like breads, pasta, chips or anything else we eat daily.
2. Watch for liquid calories
· Soda is all sugar, not only is there no nutritional value to it, it just racks up your daily calories. Go with water anytime you are thirsty. Eight glasses of water are recommended per day, but you can always put flavouring into your waters.
3. Eat more fibre
Fibre doesn't only keep you full but it also can help you lose weight. The best way to put more fibre into your diet is to change your white bread for whole grain. Or even get those fibre dissolvable powder and put it in a glass of water a day.
4. Be a smart shopper
· Eat BEFORE you go to the grocery store. If you don't you will be more tempted to buying foods you should not be eating simply because they look good and easy to make. When shopping look at the nutrition content for things like no (or low) saturated fat, low sodium, and high fibre
5. Start snacking smart
· We all snack because it holds us over until our next actual meal. Prepare yourself with smart, packable choices like a whole fruit, a granola bar, or a yogurt. If you are more of a savoury and indulgent person you can have almonds or a slice of cheese just remember your portions.
6. Plan ahead
· Meal prepping can be your best friend. Find a day in the week that you have about two hours of downtime. Find some recipes online and make foods for the week and store them in your fridge or freezer. If you don't want to meal prep like that just make sure whenever you go out for long periods of time to bring something from home like a sandwich or some small snacks. It will keep you on track.
7. Pace your eating
· If you are anything like me and eat your meals in record time try to slow it down and stretch your meals to 30 minutes. Eating slowly can cause you to eat less calories per meal. Sipping on water between bites, chewing completely and just being mindful can help you slow down your eating.

Exercise Is King - Again

Exercise is King
Like most mature adults, I am on high blood pressure medication. Which I find really irritating. SO I have been looking for ways to reduce my blood pressure enough to not need the chemical medications I am taking.
As always, research beckoned, where I found so many offerings that I almost got lost in the research instead of what I really intended to do.
1. I hate to admit it, but the first thing that came up was, to lose weight, taking particular note of your waist measurements, (under 40 in for men, 35 in for women), so assuming there are others out there like me, I am passing some of them on to you.
The following is from the staff at The Mayo Clinic
"Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea), which further raises your blood pressure.
Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes for controlling blood pressure. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) can help reduce your blood pressure.
Besides shedding pounds, you generally should also keep an eye on your waistline. Carrying too much weight around your waist can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure."
2. Then, exercise:- Just 30 mins most days of the week (I try to manage 5), can have an enormous impact and can lower your blood pressure by as much as 4 to 9 ml mercury (mm Hg). I am so up for that! Best options - walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing, or even strength training.
I think most of us can manage a walk or two and for me, if it's not an option, then I work out on some floor exercises at home. For weights I use a couple of bottles of water and sit on the edge of the sofa for leg workouts.
3. Keep to a healthy diet. It is recommended that you Be a smart shopper. Read food labels when you shop and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you're dining out, too. It's not always easy, but the benefits are huge.
Try to eat fewer processed foods. Only a small amount of sodium occurs naturally in foods. Most sodium is added during processing. Checking the labels will show just how much sodium (salt) and sugars of various kinds are added during the processing. These are added as much to increase the shelf life of a product, which doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.
These days I've started freezing my own vegetables, which I found so much less complicated and difficult than I thought. So now I have a freezer full of frozen vegetables that contain no sugar, salt which I admittedly added to the water. But, I only blanched the veggies and used the same water for any that don't add a strong flavour to the water. So my salt use is kept to a minimum.
I then checked out some foods etc that can help with lowering blood pressure. Now I've never gone in much for flavoured teas, except green and Earl Grey, but on the research front I came across the following.
Hibiscus tea contains phytochemicals that play a role in reducing blood pressure, Soy contains Isoflavones which can also help reduce the systolic blood pressure reading (the one on top). They also help in the production of nitric oxide enzymes, which help in the relaxation of blood vessels, reducing blood pressure.
4. Quit smoking
5. Work on reducing your stress levels.
6. Every cell in the body has a receptor for Vitamin D so work on absorbing, or taking Vitamin D. This can be found first and foremost in the sun's rays. It needs to be noted that if you live more than 35% up or down from the equator, this can lead to very little being absorbed as the sun's rays are weaker. Although, exposing arms and legs to the sun for 5-45 minutes between the hours of 10am - 3pm, is usually enough to meed the daily requirements for most skin types.
It can be found in oily fish, fish liver oil and egg yolks, among others. Every cell in our bodies have a receptor for Vitamin D. It's deficiency is also linked to type 1 Diabetes, MS, high blood pressure and thyroid problems.
Thanks to Authority Nutrition at Healthline.
Overweight people can also need higher amounts of the vitamin.
Don't forget alcohol -
Generally more than one drink a day for women and for men older than age 65, or more than two a day for men age 65 and younger. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor.
Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications.
Sadly (for me), Caffeine is also bad for blood pressure levels. But then, having reduced my intake has been quite good really, so can't complain.
Generally, Overall -
Blood pressure needs to be less than 120/80
To avoid high cholesterol - Keep numbers to less than
100 mg for LDL (bad) cholesterol.
60 mg + for HDL (good) cholesterol.
If overweight, or to prevent becoming overweight, watch waist measurements stay under 40 in - men, 35 in - women.
Exercise regularly
Eat less than 7% of calories in saturated fat.
Eat less than 200 mg of dietary cholesterol foods.
So, if we want to avoid, or reverse our dependency on chemicals, following a diet plan that can actually help, is a no brainer really, isn't it?
A final note, Statins are partly responsible for making recipients tired and suffering from memory loss. Another reason for being able to avoid having to take such medications I think.
This research is an amazing way of finding and, where possible, avoiding the common situations many of us encounter when we reach adulthood, for some, this doesn't just mean when we are past the age of 55.
If you have any questions, or comments, or even, Heaven forbid, criticisms or corrections, I can be reached at hilary@hilaryagreen.com

Healthy Eating - The Top Five Foods To Keep In Your Refrigerator At All Times

Hitting the grocery store and not sure what to stock up on? We have put together a list of the top five foods you must have at all times if you want your diet to be as healthy as possible. Consider these staples of any diet plan. They are not only rich in vitamins and minerals but loaded with other benefits like antioxidants and probiotics as well.
Run through this list and make sure these items are in your grocery shopping plan...
1. Spinach. As far as nutrients go, you are hard-pressed to find a better option than spinach. Spinach is loaded with...
  • vitamin C,
  • vitamin K,
  • B vitamins,
  • folic acid,
  • iron,
  • calcium, and

2. Bell peppers. Want to prevent the common cold that always seems to hit? Try bell peppers. Most people think of oranges when we think of vitamin C rich foods, but the truth is bell peppers contain just as much of this antioxidant.
Bell peppers also add a delicious sweet taste to the foods you are preparing as well, making them a great way to liven up any recipe.
3. Avocados. Have you forgotten about avocados? If so, you are not alone. Many people neglect to add avocados to their diet because we just do not think about them as a fruit. Avocados are loaded with vitamin E, which will help keep your skin, hair, and nails healthy while preventing oxidative damage. They are also a great source of dietary fibre so will help keep your blood sugar levels in check as well.
4. Berries. Having berries of any kind in your refrigerator is another must. Berries are loaded with antioxidants and are very high in fibre while containing just a small dose of sugar. Take raspberries for instance. You will get more dietary fibre than you will sugar with this berry, so it is perfect for body weight control and blood sugar management.
Whether you opt for blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries, all berries will do your health proud.
5. Eggs. Finally, do not forget about eggs. Eggs are a fantastic protein source for any time during the day, not just breakfast. Serve them scrambled, hard-boiled, poached, over easy, or in any other manner you please.

Is Nutrition Really 70% of Your Fitness Success?

General sayings and quotes are pervasive within the fitness community. Some do a great job of giving the public some guidance, while some in my humble opinion lead to more confusion. I address one of these sayings in this article which has to do with nutrition being the key to fitness success for everyone.
The real answer is one that will irk some.
It depends...
Without a doubt, for some people, eating a diet which includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, lean cuts of meat and poultry and healthy fats from oils, legumes and nuts. But for others, consuming a diet which is less "healthy" by nutritional standard, but exercising 5 to 7 days per week, produces the exact results they wish to achieve.
The point is, every one of us should be eating as healthy a diet as we can for general health, to try to stave off any dis-ease, and for optimal performance. The degree to which the diet or exercise becomes the primary focus of a person's plan is really a matter of experimentation to find the right balance between the two long-term.
The key is long-term.
Listen, it is difficult to eat meticulously 100% of the time for most people. Long-term health is not about exercise vs. nutrition, it's about making consistent choices which promote well-being and optimum performance. Work is going to get in the way sometimes. School will get in the way. The kids may get in the way. There are many, many factors which will come up that have the potential to knock you off balance on occasion. The goal is though, to try to make sure that 90% of your meals are contain the foods we talked about above, and to take it easy on yourself when you have to eat a meal which isn't quite so nutritious.
If you focus on this and not whether exercise or nutrition should consume your energy and focus, you'll generally achieve any goals you may have and live a healthier lifestyle.Begin by getting in plenty of vegetables with each meal. Colors matter! So, try to get in all the colors of the rainbow maybe not each day, but certainly each week. The colors of fruits and vegetables come from specific phytochemicals and phytonutrients which not only give the food its color, but also provide us with nutrients and intermediaries to serve as catalyst to many bodily functions.
Whether you are a Vegan or not is a matter of personal choice form most people. There can be food allergies and intolerances to both meats and certain vegetables and seeds and nuts. You do though, want to make sure you are getting in enough protein over the course of the day to satisfy you unique bodily needs primarily from whole fresh foods, and secondarily from protein supplements if you are unable to get them in via whole fresh sources.

How to Control High Blood Pressure - 5 Tips

The force with which the blood flows in your arteries is called blood pressure. A normal blood pressure is around 120/80 mmHg. If you have a cardiac problem, the force may get stronger and the blood will flow with more pressure in your veins. As a result, the higher pressure puts more stress on your heart and veins. This may cause damage to your heart. In severe cases, patients suffer from a heart attack because of high blood pressure. Therefore, it's important that you control your blood pressure with the following home remedies.
Get moving
It's a good idea to exercise for at least 30 minutes in the morning on a regular basis. This can bring the reading down by up to 9 mmHg. However, you should keep in mind that you should take a slow start and then keep on picking up the pace as well as the frequency of your workouts.
If you don't want to join a gym, you can go for a swim, jog or a hike. Actually, what you need to do is get moving. Aside from this, you can give a go to doing pushups, and lifting weights.
Change your diet
If you follow a good diet, you can reduce your blood pressure by up to 14mmHg. Ideally, your diet should include whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Apart from this, you may want to try fish, nuts, lean meats and dairy products that are low in fat. The food that you should eliminate from your diet should be fatty meats, fatty dairy products and products that are high in fat. It's also a good idea to avoid sweetened beverages like fruit punch and soda.
Use less salt
You may want to use salt sparingly to keep your blood pressure normal. When you use too much salt, your body retains liquid. As a result, your BP goes up. According to doctors, you should not take more than 1.4 grams of salt per day. In other words, the maximum amount of salt you can take is half a teaspoon in 24 hours. As an alternative to salt, you can use herbs and spices.
Control your weight
Your weight has a significant impact on your blood pressure. So, if you are overweight, losing even a few pounds like 4 kg can help a lot. Therefore, we suggest that you keep an eye on your waistline. Ideally, if you are a man, your waist should not measure more than 40 inches. On the other hand, the maximum allowance for women is 35 inches.
Lower your stress level
Since this is a fast-paced world, it is difficult to slow down and unwind for a while. Stress is a result of the never-ending daily chores. So, it's important that you get some time off and reduce your stress. As a matter of fact, stress raises your blood pressure putting you at a higher risk of heart attacks.
So, if you have been looking for natural ways to keep your blood pressure normal, we suggest that you follow the methods given in this article.
