Is Losing Strength After 40 Natural?

There are many falsehoods that have developed over the years regarding aging and strength. As someone who has worked out all my life they have always seemed liked excuses to me, but they are things I hear all the time. Here are a few of the "LIES", let's call them what they are, I'd like to put to rest.
LIE#1: You naturally put on weight as you get older... WRONG!
Stop blaming those expanding love handles on getting older! In fact, of any other challenge, this is the simplest to combat. There are four factors which contribute to middle age weight gain: slowing metabolism, lower testosterone, poor diet and lack of exercise. Look at that list. Two of the four factors are completely within our control. It's time to stop blaming those expanding love handles on getting older. It's just an excuse. All you need to do is make the right food choices and take care with what you eat. That tiny change alone will stop the onset of weight gain.
But when it comes to strength, here's another myth to bust...
LIE #2: As you get older, you naturally get weaker... WRONG!
I'll show how wrong this lie is. Research from the University of Oklahoma found that over an eight-week period a group of middle-aged guys (35-50) succeeded losing body fat and building muscle. But that's not all. Compared with a group of college-aged guys over the same period, the older guys lost MORE body fat and gained MORE muscle. So, let me say this again: None of this is inevitable. Yes, you're susceptible... but it doesn't have to be your future. Getting older isn't the problem. (And any guy who blames age for their performance is making excuses.)
You don't have to accept these lies.
LIE #3: As you age, you naturally lose energy... WRONG!
There's one everyday reality that hits you harder than anything else: always feeling tired. To feel that overwhelming exhaustion every day is, well... exhausting. You wake up tired. Yawn your way through the work day. And then spend the evening slouched on the sofa unable to keep your eyes open.
And you pay the price.
You spend less quality time with your wife. Less time with your kids. Every activity is a struggle. Before you thought nothing of heading out to do any number of outdoor activities... now, you're lucky if you make it through the evening. Your energy levels start on a downward spiral when your lack of energy reduces your activity level. It becomes a vicious cycle.
But here's the thing about what I call the Energy Spiral. It goes up as well as down. Find the energy and get back into daily activity and the spiral turns upwards. More energy = even more energy. Reinvigorating your body to release enough energy to keep increasing energy levels needs to be a major part of any program.
LIE #4: Injuries are just going to happen as you get older... WRONG!
Remember what you were like in your 20s? Knocking around the gym. Lifting big. Huge gains every week. Eating whatever you wanted with no side-effects. And then what happened when you hit your 30s? Change happens. A nag turns into an ache. The gains take a little bit longer. The fat clings a little harder to your body than it used to. The realization hits: we're not invincible. Progress is painful. What worked for you as a 20-year-old kid doesn't work for you now.
It's perfectly natural. Your body changes. But NONE of the programs reflect that change. They expect you to try nailing it like you did in your youth... and when you don't get results, frustration sets in. You try working out harder. And for longer. Yet the results stall. Your energy starts dropping and soon you're exhausted, frustrated or, even worse, injured. It doesn't have to be that way. With the right program you can avoid injuries!
It's worse than hitting a plateau. And it's not just a case of changing it up or trying something different. The next stage is all about motivation...
LIE #5: Motivation is much harder to come by as we age... WRONG!
Of course, it's not your fault. When you hit your 30s, life gets in the way. You mature. Your priorities change. Your days fill up with the everyday rigor of spending time on your career. You dedicate your free time on evenings and weekends to your family. Hanging out in the gym or sweating it out for hours on end stop having the same appeal. Your motivation wanes. Your diet slips. Life gets in the way. Your priorities may have changed... but your body still needs attention
As you can see, NONE of these issues are physiological.
Our challenges are not about our body. They are around what we choose to do with our body. These are the same challenges for every guy, like you and me. You may be experiencing one or more of these right now... you may be going through all three. By challenging and resolving each of these issues, you can turn back the clock. Deterioration and decay doesn't have to be your reality.
I've found a program that works to help you overcome these lies we've all been told. Known as 40 Strong I think if you'll give it a try, you're going to be achieving the kind of results you did in your 20's.
40 Strong is about you doing what you love to do when it comes to activity. This program is about choosing different ways to be physically active. Liking what you're doing for exercise is the key to longevity and long-term results.
Because if you truly like something, it will be very hard to stop doing it.
I always like going back to children when it comes to explaining exercise and being active. Most of the children in this world have one thing in common; they like to play. Playing is exercise. Kids run, jump, twist, climb and move their bodies with tremendous power, strength and agility. As we age, we lose that ability. Not because we got older, but because we stopped moving like that every day and this point is missed by many experts in the field of strength and health. This program is about adding recess back into your life and having that time everyday where you get to play in different ways. In doing that you will regain energy, muscle, mobility, confidence and your life will be forever changed.

Benefits of Dance for Older People

Dancing is a past time enjoyed by many both young and old across the world on a daily basis. Whether it is dancing whilst listening to music whilst doing the housework or attending a weekly salsa class the beauty of dance is that it is really for everyone and can be enjoyed at any time.
However we would like to highlight the benefits of dance particularly for older adults.
Promotes physical activity
Older people are less likely to exercise however those who partake in regular physical activity are more likely to live longer as they maintain their balance, strength gait and cardiovascular health. Dance is great for older adults as it is a low level exercise that works all of the body from head to toe and encourages moving through a space, gets the heart pumping and provides the opportunity to gently move and stretch.
Promotes cognitive function
Older people typically experience a progressive decline in cognitive ability, memory and reaction time as they age. Learning dance steps and sequences can be mentally demanding and is a skill that needs to be developed but dancers are known to maximize cognitive function and muscle memory through practice. Dance also challenges reaction time and perception because of the quick thinking that is required to remember what step comes next.
Promotes Social Inclusion
Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Dance is a social activity where people meet weekly and form friendships. The best dance classes are the ones where the dancers go and have a coffee and a chat afterwards reducing the feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Improves mental wellbeing
Older people are more vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems, with depression affecting around 22% of men and 28% of women aged 65 years and over. Dance can help to reduce stress, increases levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and helps to develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition. Dance which is a meaningful activity can also encourage individuals to focus on activity for a sustained period and help individuals feel a sense of achievement when they have learnt the steps to a challenging routine.
Promotes self-expression
Older people may not get the opportunity to express their creativity and perhaps are no longer self-aware. Dancing can be powerful energy release that can release tension and provide you with the opportunity to explore your own range of movement and feelings. If you choose to dance to music then there are the added benefits of having songs as a stimulus which can also enhance your mood and also perhaps encourage reminisce.
So dust off your dancing shoes and Keep Dancing.

Why Fitness Is The Essence Of Overall Wellness

https://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Fitness-Is-The-Essence-Of-Overall-Wellness&id=9819816
If you are looking forward to overall wellness, then you have got to know that fitness is the essence of it. Unlike the popular perception, achieving fitness is not that difficult. You can't judge the fitness of a person by just looking at that person. Experiences have taught me that the fittest looking person might not be the one who impresses you with his or her fitness levels. So, it's pointless to have unrealistic views about fitness. As far as fitness is concerned, the health of your heart is extremely important. Probably, you lack a typically "fit" looking body. But that doesn't mean that you are not fit. You can be fit irrespective of the way your body looks. Cardio fitness is the real measure for fitness. If you are really serious about fitness, then you have to channel your energies to improve the health of your heart. When your heart is healthy, other aspects like increased lung capacity, strong bones, strong muscles, weight loss etc. will follow.
Understanding the concept of fitness
In today's world obsessed with fitness, we have complicated the concept of fitness. According to the basic definition, fitness is all about your ability carry out your daily chores without fatigue. A fit person will be able to carry out his chores with alertness and vigour. Back in the day, people used to have that ability. They were all physically active. They were all fit. So, there was no need to talk about fitness. However, things have changed a lot. Lifestyle diseases have become common these days. We do very less physical activities as our jobs force us to stay glued to our seats all day long with zero physical activity. And that has contributed to lot of lifestyle diseases. No wonder why we talk about fitness more these days because we are all worried about our fitness levels. Lack of physical activities made us susceptible to all sorts of health problems.
Significance of fitness
The sedentary lifestyle has made way for lot of diseases. And people have realized the significance of regular exercise to stay fit. However, not too many are able to follow it given the hectic lifestyle. If you want to stay away from many diseases, then it is important to do cardio exercise on a regular basis. As we all know, heart disease has been one of the notorious silent killers. Stroke, diabetes, colon cancer etc. are other diseases which are connected to lack of fitness. There are plenty of benefits for regular exercise. Besides the health benefits, you will be able to control your weight as well. In turn, you will be able to fight aging too.
Psychological benefits of exercise
Exercise has many psychological benefits as well. When you exercise, it releases the feel good hormone endorphins, which significantly reduces stress. And it will elevate your mood as well. It has the ability to fight depression as well. If you are one those fitness freaks who exercise on a daily basis, then you will have a positive attitude towards life. Also, you tend to have better self-esteem. Exercise gives you better sleep at night. You never complain about fatigue either. Last but not least, regular exercise can improve your memory as well.
The amount of exercise to stay fit
Well, this has been a hotly debated topic for years. Different people will give different advice. But one thing is definite - regular exercise is the best strategy. How long should you exercise? Well, 30 minutes a day would be more than enough. And if you are able to extend to an hour then it is better. Some people would suggest that doing exercise 5 times a week is a good strategy. Well, doing it every day is a far more effective strategy. Exercise is like drinking coffee. Your brain gets addicted to the feel good hormones and craves for it every day. For the same reason, your brain will remind you to do exercise every day. That's like following a natural clock. Your brain knows what is best for your body. Therefore, doing it every day will make it easier for you to get adjusted to the natural cycle.
Remember, fitness is the key to your overall well-being. So, it is time for you to embrace it!

Incorporating Heart Healthy Habits in Life

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease remains the No. 1 global cause of death with 17.3 million deaths each year. That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030.
The Heart Foundation suggests that cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms of cancer combined and coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing nearly 380,000 people annually.
Many of us are well aware of these facts about heart diseases but still we do so little for the health of our tickers, which keep working grudgingly for us despite being subjected to our neglect. Caring for our tickers requires attention to many aspects of our life. By adopting the following heart healthy habits, we can add years to life besides staving off financial burden.
Heart healthy habits:
Exercise regularly - Our heart is a muscle that needs to be worked regularly to stay strong and healthy. Though any amount of exercise is better than no exercise, we must aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity (e.g., brisk walking) every week or 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity (e.g., jogging, running) or a combination of both every week.
In addition, we need muscle strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest shoulders, and arms) on 2 or more days a week.
Eat healthy - We must choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium. In addition, we must eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, fish (preferably oily fish at least twice per week), nuts, legumes and seeds and try eating some meals without meat. Further, one should limit sugar-sweetened beverages and red meat. If one chooses to eat meat, one should select the leanest cuts available.
Quit smoking - Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and causes one of every three deaths from CVD. The risk of CVD increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day as well as the numbers of years they were smoked. Smoking cigarettes with lower levels of tar or nicotine does not reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Avoid second hand smoke - People are more likely to develop heart disease if exposed to second-hand smoke at home or work. According to the American Heart Association, exposure to tobacco smoke contributes to about 34,000 premature heart disease deaths and 7,300 lung cancer deaths each year. This is because the chemicals emitted from cigarette smoke promote the development of plaque buildup in the arteries.
Practice dental hygiene - It has been found that bacteria in the mouth, involved in the development of gum disease, can move into the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation in the blood vessels. These changes may, in turn, increase our risk of heart disease and stroke.
Have regular and adequate sleep daily - A 2011 European Heart Journal review of 15 medical studies involving almost 475,000 people found that short sleepers had a 48% increased risk of developing or dying from coronary heart disease (CHD) in a seven to 25-year follow-up period. Interestingly, long sleepers, those who averaged nine or more hours a night, also showed a 38% increased risk of developing or dying from CHD. Lack of sleep doesn't necessarily cause heart disease but it really increases the risk factors for heart disease.
Simple habit changing tips:
Substituting healthy habits for unhealthy ones rewards us with good health and better quality of life. Still many find it difficult to incorporate healthy habits in their life as sooner or later they revert back to unhealthy lifestyle, thereby losing all the beneficial effects they had. Like any other health habit, heart healthy habits need to be followed throughout life.
The following tips will help us to incorporate heart healthy habits in life:
• One has to make a decision and do conscious efforts to stick to the commitment.
• One has to discover triggers and obstacles that need to be overcome otherwise one will set oneself up for failure.
• One should devise a plan and review it from time to time.
• One should employ visualizations and affirmations, relating to habits to be changed because they program the subconscious with the right mindset for establishing a new habit.
• By enlisting the support of family and friends, we can steer away the temptation that may thwart our efforts.
• One should find ways to reward oneself because they make us feel good, even if it's just temporarily. They will help keeping us motivated to stay on the track.
The bottom line:
Our awareness about the heart disease as number one cause of death worldwide has risen. Nevertheless, many still lack the adequate knowledge of those heart healthy habits that need to be incorporated to keep our ticker strong. What's more, though many do make efforts to adopt them, they fail to continue with them and are thus unable to derive benefits from them.

5 Reasons Why You Should Stretch

Stretching is very important in beginning and ending an exercise. But its functions go beyond preventing strains and sprains. So why stretch?
1. Stretching before beginning an exercise prevents injuries. It helps the muscles "warm-up" and prepare before divulging into more intense exercises. It helps prevent "pulled muscles". It allows a longer range of motion. For instance, if you are going to do a strong punch without stretching, you will 'shock' your relaxed muscles into motion, thus it will cause pain and soreness. To prevent these from happening, begin with by gently pumping your arms, or by extending your arms overhead or below. You may also do leg extensions, either on the ground or elevated. For elevated leg stretches, it must not be immediate, but gradual and slow. The higher the leg stretch is, the more the muscles are pulled, so one has to do it slowly. When stretching, don't bounce. Bouncing can cause small tears (micro tears) in the muscles which can cause scar tissues. These scar tissues can make movement painful and future stretching more painful and difficult. If you feel that the stretch is becoming more painful, then it means that you have gone too far. Focus on a more comfortable, pain-free stretch. Make sure to stretch both sides, too. It extends your range of motion more that way. Plus, movement doesn't just go one direction, does it?
2. Stretching improves flexibility. When you constantly stretch, you are also making yourself more flexible, thus activities that require flexibility, such dancing and kicks, short sprints and dashes, even basic tasks such as lifting and tying your shoe, can become easier. Flexibility also wanes s people ages, so it's best to regularly stretch so that you can maintain your flexibility.
3. Stretching promotes better breathing and respiratory (or oxygen) flow. Stretching allows oxygen to flow better through your body and it also helps better blood circulation. Body pains and sores usually root from increased tightness and tension from the lack of oxygen that flows to the different parts of your body. Stretching allows the oxygen to move freely and move better.
4. Stretching reduces stress and improves posture. Stress causes the muscles to tighten and knot, thus it can cause strain and back pains. Tension causes negative effects on your body. Muscles harden and slow down the flow of the oxygen (carried by the blood) to the brain which muddles thinking. Stretching brings back the oxygen flow and regulates it, re-oxygenating the brain and also the heart. Aside from contributing greatly to the circulation or blood flow, stretching also releases endorphins or the feel-good hormones in the body which can improve your mood and make you feel good. Stretching also greatly improves posture as it prevents the muscles from getting too tight, which causes slouching and rigidness of the body. When you have good posture, circulation flows better and you can look good and feel good throughout the day.
5. Stretch after exercising. Lactic acid builds up in your muscles while you exercise which leads to fatigue and soreness. This can be remedied by "cooling down" exercises or post-exercise stretching. Post-exercise stretching can help in workout recovery, decreases muscle soreness that comes after the workout and ensures that your muscles and tendons are in good working order. If you stretch after exercising, you are conditioning your muscles, and, in a way, you are relaxing your muscles after a vigorous regimen. Its goal is to return your muscles to the pre-exercise stage. It's like telling your muscles that the hard part of the workout is done. This part of the exercise is called the "cool down" and usually consists of light exercises such as brisk walking, calf stretching and static stretching. Aside from relaxing your muscles, cool down exercise are also meant to re-oxygenate your heart, since you have used too much oxygen working out. This means allowing steady breathing and the muscles push the oxygen back to the heart.
Stretching, although takes minimal time in the whole workout or exercises, is still a very important part of the activity and should not be taken lightly. How sore you can get or how good you feel after a workout depends on how properly and how effectively you have stretched.

Cardio Fitness for the Aged Person

One needs to understand the pressure put on the heart and lungs by overweight and lack of exercise. Both these are pertinent to people who are over 70 years because many tend to sit back, eat more, and indulge themselves in table games or, like me, on the computer. Hours of sitting is extremely unhealthy and one day a voice inside me told me to join a gym. This was completely unexpected and obeying that voice was the best thing.
That voice inside is well-known to me because of memory of reincarnation and link to the Universal Spirit, the real God. It has given me a job to do which is the reason I spend long hours at the computer. Over the last 30 years or so exercise involved only garden maintenance and walks, aside from house work.
Now the command was received and a local gym for women only received me with open arms. Aside from a fortnightly fee of $38, well affordable on a pension, there are PT classes that include one for healthy heart. It is held twice a week and is basically very enjoyable.
The exercises are simple and over the course of 45 minutes involve little weights, steps, and ball movements, such as throwing and catching. Sometimes there is also some square dancing type movements that help with balance. Stretching and flexing of muscles has become now a daily routine with me.
On the other days the gym provides all forms of equipment for those who want to work-out. For me the bike is my favourite although many use the walking and rowing machines. Other equipment allows stretching of muscles in the neck, back, and legs, which I also find useful.
Building up muscles that have disappeared over the years of inactivity is one of my achievements and being able to get up from the ground when I fall over is another. Since starting at this place my balance has improved to the point where there have been no falls at home whereas before I would trip and fall over anything in my path.
It is something for older people to consider. Don't sit around and wait for death to catch up with you but enjoy yourself doing physical training and show the world what you are made of. The other benefit for me has been the great friends made while exercising - a real bonus.

Exercises for Older People Just Starting Out

We always encourage older people to begin an exercise program, but when they are just starting out it is important to know how to exercise safely. Whoever you are exercising has to meet that person's needs, and obviously by starting a program when at 60 those requirements aren't going to be the same as somebody who is exercising at 30 years old. First, a consultation with a doctor is always recommended just to be informed of what the exercise plan will be.
Then you can get started. This following routine will get your body going if you do them three or four times a week. These are some of the simple exercises that will get you started:
1. Knee lifts. As we age our hips and core can lose some suppleness if we fail to keep them full flexed. Do these by starting with your feet about shoulders apart. With hands on hips put all of your weight on your right foot, bend your left knee toward your chest. After one minute do this with the other leg. This will also be an excellent exercise for balance. To begin you might want to use a hand on the wall for support.
2. Calf raises. This is a great workout for strengthening the calve muscles. While standing with your feet shoulder distance apart, lift up on your toes slowly. Hold that position for a couple of seconds and then drop back down to your heels. Repeat this for one minute. To add intensity as you progress you can carry small weights in your hands. If you want to work on balance do the same motion but only one foot at a time.
3. Step and tap. This is another great exercise for balance, but it is also good for a light aerobics workout. While standing imagine that there is a line on the ground next to you. Step sideways over that line one foot at a time, then when both feet are across that imaginary line step back with each foot. Do this for about one minute at whatever speed feels comfortable for you. As you advance you can bounce back and forth with both feet together.
4. Arm circles. One of the areas that can lock up when not used is the shoulder joints. Like the knees they are big joints and should be exercise regularly to keep that full range of motion you will need as you age. This is a great exercise for keeping the joints supple, and it is to stand with your arms on your side outward in a T-shape with your body. Begin moving your hands in a circular motion, graduate making wider and wider circles with your hands. After one minute makes circles in the opposite direction for a minute. This can be enhanced by holding small weights.
5. Standing crunches. We all know that crunches are great exercises for the abs, but they are quite difficult to do. Standing crunches are easier and will still give the abdominal muscles a workout. With your feet slightly wider than your shoulders lift your left arm above and over your right side until you feel the left side stretch. Bring your left elbow down and crunch to the left and compress your torso as you bring your left knee up. Have the feeling of pinching something between your elbow and knee. After returning to the original position, continue with this again for one minute and then switch sides.
Where you carry your weight has a lot to do with your overall health, as it is a  marker for issues  having to do with the kidneys and liver. 5 Magic Numbers Every Dieter Needs to Know

Does this sound familiar? You've been watching yourself all week (avoiding junk, skipping seconds) and still, your weight is exactly the same as it was a week ago-or worse, even inched up a pound or two. It's hard to remember that weight loss is a long-term process, you've got to stay patient. But I've learned that focusing on just your weight can sabotage your motivation. So instead here are five other numbers to think about. Keep track of these and your overall health (as well as your weight) ought to improve.
1. Waist circumference
By now, you've probably heard enough experts blast BMI (body mass index, or a ratio of your weight to your height), saying it's not a good measure of body fat and health. Instead, you should know how many inches your waist measures. That's because the fat that accumulates around your middle is linked to a host of health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even death. One 2010 study examined more than 100,000 Americans age 50 and older and found that people with the biggest waist size had about twice the risk of dying as the slimmest.
Numbers to know: Aim for less than 35 inches for women and 40 for men.
2. Daily calorie requirement
Our health books editor loves to point out the one thing most successful weight-loss programs have in common: They cut calories. Why? Chances are you consume way more than you realize or need.
Number to know: Most not-too-active middle aged women should consume around 1,600 calories a day to lose weight; men should consume 2,000 to 2,200. Try Mayo Clinic's calorie calculator tool for a personalized guesstimate that takes age, activity levels, and other factors into account.
3. Daily fiber intake
You probably scan food labels for calorie and fat content. But if I asked you how much fiber you're eating each day, I bet you wouldn't know (and it's probably half of what you should get). The big deal about fiber and weight loss is that it takes your body a long time to digest it compared to other nutrients. This tamps down hunger cravings and prevents blood sugar spikes. You know how can feel voracious an hour after eating a jumbo plain bagel? That's probably because your meal had no fiber.
Number to know: Many experts recommend 25 to 35 grams a day (a medium apple and a cup of oatmeal each have four, for example); some would love to see us eating even more. Most adults get about 15 grams a day. If you're pretty low on the fiber intake, add it slowly to avoid feeling bloated.
4. How much you sleep
Sleep helps the body regulate complex hormonal processes that affect our appetite, cravings, and weight. There's now ample research that shows people who get less sleep are more likely to be overweight and munch on junk food than those who get more. Skimping on sleep may sabotage your diet as much as the Snickers calling your name from the office candy bowl.
Number to know: If you're consistently getting six hours or less, your sleep habits may be tampering with your weight-loss goals. Most adults need seven to eight hours a night. A good clue you're getting enough: not needing an alarm clock to wake up.
5. How many steps you take each day
More and more research shows it's not the hour we spend sweating it out in the gym that counts, but all the incremental activity that adds up over the course of the day from things like taking the stairs, walking over to a colleague's desk instead of emailing, or standing and pacing while you chat on the phone. Sitting down is bad for your body and your metabolism-our hunter-gatherer ancestors were constantly on the move, and so we've evolved not to sit still for hours on end.
Number to know: The magic step count (which you can learn by wearing a pedometer) is 10,000 a day. Most inactive people get 2,000 or fewer.

Staying Healthy and Fit

https://ezinearticles.com/?Staying-Healthy-and-Fit&id=9939019
There are a variety of reasons why people exercise, and many continue to exercise daily. Exercise has so many benefits that the list goes on and on. A few reasons why you should incorporate exercise into your daily routine are:
  • Weight Maintenance
  • Weight Loss
  • Stress Reduction
  • Combat Disease and Health Conditions
  • Improve Mood
  • Improve Circulation
  • Promotes Better Sleep
  • Improve Sex Life
  • And More
Getting Started with Exercise
We are not all in the most perfect shape of our lives. Our jobs can even take a toll if we are having to sit in one place for extended amount of times. Our bodies gradually begin to adapt to our daily routines and then the downhill battle begins. There are ways to incorporate exercise into our daily lives without it taking up too much time and energy.
Before beginning any type of exercise routine, it is best to speak with your personal physician to be sure that the exercise is good for your health and any predisposed conditions.
Beginning slowly is the key when it comes to beginning an exercise routine. Exercising does not have to cost an arm and leg and there are routines that can cost you very little. Things like taking a walk a couple of times a day take nothing but your time. Of course, it is important to dress appropriately for the weather where you live and walk.
Exercise at Home or the Gym
Nowadays, there are many people who do not want to go to the nearest gym. Whether you are uncomfortable being in front of others or just do not want to pay for a gym membership the option to exercise at home is always available.
There are many choices for exercise equipment that can be used right at home. Many stores carry a large supply of equipment and clothing for every level of fitness. Below are a few examples of the equipment and accessories available from this company.
  • Waist Trimmers: These beauties make it possible to have a thinner waist without having to take time out of your busy schedule and can be used in addition to your workout routine. Waist trimmers can add extra back support when you are working out and add heat to the area to help burn fat faster. These belts are comfortable and are made with materials that can breathe.
  • Indoor Bike Trainers: For those of us who love to ride bikes these bike trainers are an ideal way to exercise. Of course, the weather and time may not always be on our side, so the use of a bike trainer allows us to exercise when we want whether it is too dark outside or too cold.
  • Running Shoes: Sports equipment stores and shoe stores carry the best when it comes to running shoes. It is very important to wear good running shoes while out jogging to avoid injury to our feet and body.
  • Treadmills: This is a must have if you are serious about your exercise routine. Using a treadmill daily to walk or run allows you to still be able to exercise even if the weather is too hot or too cold. Treadmills have become more affordable over the past few years and are becoming a staple in many households.
Whether you are planning on walking, running, or even playing basketball there is a company out there to help you acquire the gear you need at very affordable prices. Many sports equipment offers up-to-date reviews on the best options available for your exercise routine.

Get A Stronger Grip

In my work as a personal trainer, I am constantly trying to help people strengthen their weakest link. For bodybuilders this is always a lagging body part. For people who are primary interested in getting stronger--in simply lifting more weight in more lifts--I can almost always help them increase their overall strength by helping them get a stronger grip.
For strength trainees, the grip is often the equivalent of the weakest body part for the physique competitors. Here's why: it often gets neglected. How many times have you seen a man with a giant upper body and skinny little legs? Well, he has been neglecting to work on his legs. Therefore, his legs hinder his goal of overall physique development. He can never look any better than his legs do in a competition.
With someone trying to develop brute strength, the hands are often the neglected part of the equation. I have one client who wants to be able to dead lift 500 pounds. What is ironic is that his back and legs are already strong enough to lift that much weight--he just can't hold onto it. The barbell falls out of his hands because his grip is not strong enough.
It doesn't necessarily act as a hindrance simply to those wanting to increase their max strength. If you want to be able to lift more total volume during a session, then hand fatigue in a movement like a dumbbell row can also be your limiting factor.
Strong hands are useful. That's the core of this article. Whether you're an athlete, a laborer, or you just want to be as healthy as possible, there is no downside to developing hand strength. Here are a couple of exercises to get you started:
The plate curl
This is just a normal bicep curl, but holding a weight plate instead of a dumbbell or barbell. Pinch a 10-25 lb plate between the thumb and the four fingertips. Now curl the weight approximately to chin level without letting the wrist bend.
grippers
I'm not talking about the little plastic grippers you can buy at Wal Mart. I'm talking about heavy duty torsion grippers like the Captains of Crush grippers from Iron https://ezinearticles.com/?Get-A-Stronger-Grip&id=5056623mind, or David Horne's Vulcan grip tools.
Heavy grippers look like others that you have seen, but they have hundreds of pounds of resistance, not dozens. Hence, they can't be worked for high reps or frequent sessions.
summary
It is simple--just use your hands more and focus on strength. Can you do more weight in a hand exercise than you could last week. Then you are stronger. Can you do more reps than you used to be able to? Then you are stronger.
Repeat until strong, then keep going. You won't be sorry.
When I'm not trying to get a stronger grip you can find me strength training in my garage or working with others. I'm a passionate amateur with 10 years of experience. Lift heavy and be happy!

Balance Is Key

I can almost guarantee that if you've taken any sort of health class, no matter if it was voluntary or forced by your high school, you've learned all about a balanced diet. You've found the importance of figuring out a way to have your cake and eat healthy too.
When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, I find it important to work out once a day and eat healthy throughout the work week. Let's be honest, the thought of a strict no carb diet is dreadful, and how many times can we actually say it's something we've followed through with? I know for me, the word diet and the thought of a dramatic change are too intimidating to even think about. Instead, I've reverted to a lifestyle with a balanced routine.
As for working out, I have given myself the goal of sweating for at least 30 minutes a day. It gives me the "I did something good for myself" feeling with the "OK I can do this" mentality. I chose 30 minutes a day because it's not only doable but it's also exciting to think I get to set aside a half hour to be with myself, my music, and not care about what everyone else is doing.
Similar to my workout regimen, I have set a limit to going out only on the weekends, except if there's a special occasion. Alcohol consumption is tough on the body and paired with the loss of sleep can cause you to eat more and turn into a cycle of unhealthy chaos. I learned the importance of this balance by first cutting out alcohol altogether, only to experience the pendulum swing to the more common side of casual and social alcohol intake. It took me a while to develop an understanding of how my body reacts to certain spirits, and how often I can drink without putting a damper on the next few days.
For me, finding a balance between dining out and eating in has been nothing short of difficult. From my friends asking me if I want to go to dinner or the thought of not wanting to cook, finding moderation here is tough. Throughout college, I found it difficult to say no to going out to eat because it was social and I was exhausted from my day. However, once I began to meal prep, the game changed for the better. I started to give myself limits once again and told myself if I ate in at least three nights a week, I could go out to dinner on the weekends without feeling guilty.
Balance in life is difficult to find, through the hectic demands of work and the little time we have left for ourselves at the end of the day, I have found it important to balance the few parts we have control of.
If you're looking for more balance in your life and want someone else to take over the looks portion of it, check out http://www.mobilestyles.com

Alternative Therapy: Yoga In Anti Ageing Progression

Yoga may have a profound and positive effect in anti aging progression, some renowned institute studies suggested.
Aging is a natural process of growing old.
Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
According to the study to explore the impact of yoga and meditation based lifestyle intervention (YMLI) on cellular aging in 96 healthy individuals randomly assigned to a 12-weeks of YMLI, at the end of 12 weeks of lesson, YMLI group expressed significant improvements in both the cardinal biomarkers of cellular aging and the metabotrophic biomarkers influencing cellular aging in compared to baseline values.
The efficacy of the program in reduced cellular aging process was attributed to the activities in decreased production of ROS and pro inflammatory cytokins and hormone cortisol, and increased mean values of telomerase activity in regulated aging progression and hormone β-endorphin in reduced stress and maintain homeostasis.
Dr. Madhuri Tolahunase, the led author, after taking into account of other co founders, said,"Lifestyle is an integrated entity, and an intervention, like YMLI, that has overall positive influence on our health appears most useful versus changing only one aspect at a time, as is seen by action of certain drugs. Yoga is holistic and a mind-body medicine and is more beneficial and advantageous than individual interventions like physical exercise, caloric restriction, and antioxidants".
Other researchers, in the study of yoga breathing in protected skin against aging, filed the following results
1. Yoga breathing reduced psychological aspects of stress and anxiety which have been found to associate to promoted aging
2. Yoga also expressed an impact in regulated advanced glycation end products (AGE) which have recently been shown to play a role in tissue aging
3. Comprehensive yoga program including breathing and meditative exercises may have a profound effect in enhanced gene expression involving oxidative stress, DNA damage, cell cycle control, aging and apoptosis and
4. Detoxification
In further analysis, Dr, Beri K the led author said, "(Contract to general belief)The interesting correlation of insulin regulation and glucose control can be translated to improvement and maybe reversal of the effects on AGE protein accumulation in the body tissue".
In support of the above differentiation, Dr. Brown RP at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, launched an investigation of yoga breathing in anti aging progression, suggested that
1. Yoga breathing (pranayama) can have a significant and positive effect in bringing the mind to the present moment and reduce stress
2. Yoga breathing delayed the aging process through reduced expression of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and for victims of mass disasters.
3. The practices also relieved many forms of suffering.
Finally, after taking account of other risk factors, researchers concluded that yoga breathing can affect longevity mechanisms.
Taking altogether, Yoga used alone or combined with meditation may have a therapeutic effect in aging progression through regulating cellular and psychological expressions

Health and Wellness Tips With A Long Fitness Life

Your health is your wealth. A healthy man is a wealthy man, literally. You may think of a tycoon who owns so much material wealth but their health troubles them. What is the point of all the material wealth if you cannot enjoy it? The money spent on doctors could have been channelled in other better avenues. Similarly, ever thought of how quick an employee gets replaced at work? You probably fell ill or a colleague passed on. The job vacancy goes up no sooner than the bad news leaves your mind.
Therefore, it is important that you take care of your health. It is with this in mind, we have noted down these health tips. There are simply recommendations. We are free to do more or less, as per what we desire.
1. Drink Water
This may sound cliché but it is very important. Top of the list in good health tips to practise is staying hydrated. The human body functions mainly on water. Take a person who is fasting, they can do away with food but they are allowed to take water. Water keeps you alert and keeps your body functional. At times, people have headaches simply because of dehydration. However, most people are quick to take paracetamol tablets. It is recommended that you take between 6 - 8 glasses of water every day. Stay hydrated and you definitely will remain rejuvenated.
2. Work out
Among daily health tips that we should not compromise is working out. Now, you don't need to have a gym membership. Life is not as complicated. We all want to have the gym membership but what if you don't? You can simply buy a skipping rope and put in the cardio at home. Get a comfortable pair of trainers and have a morning or evening run. If that's too much, walk. If you own a pet, this can be ideal timing for you to bond.
3. Meditate
The career woman today has so much going on in her daily activities. She ought to be a wife at home, mother and deliver at work. It is very easy to lose yourself when so much is expected of you. Among the health tips for women would be embracing meditation. Most people say they don't have time for such but if it is important, you find time for it. Take time alone and just get lost in your positive thoughts. Visualize or even take part in yoga. You take control of your emotional health particularly which is very important.
4. Sleep well
Sleep is a very debatable subject. Some people prescribe 8 hours of sleep while others prescribe 6 hours. In the same line of thought, you hear of very successful people who sleep for 4 hours and are very functional. Therefore, my recommendation is sleep well. It is not the quantity but quality of sleep that counts. If you sleep for 10 hours and it's a noisy place, you won't rest well. You can however sleep for 2 hours in a very serene environment and get up very energetic. It is the quality that counts, not the quantity.
A power nap in the afternoon is said to keep one youthful. I don't know how true it is but there could be truth to it. What I know is that when you feel sluggish in the afternoon, a power nap goes a long way. There is no point of dragging through your tasks yet you can just sleep for ten minutes and be rejuvenated. However, do not be a serial afternoon sleeper and call it a power nap. That is outright laziness.
5. Eat well
Among the good health tips to practise on a daily is your diet. Having a balanced diet is very important. Your body will not lack anything. Similarly, with food it is the quality and not quantity that matters. You may eat so much but your body will only take up what it needs. That roast beef can be very tempting but your body will only take up the amount of protein needed. Just have the appropriate serving for you. What is not used up ends up being fat in your body.
6. Laugh more
As absurd as it sounds, this is the easiest good health tip you can utilise. We live in a world where everybody is focused on getting things done. People no longer savour the taste of good food. People can't smell well brewed coffee. It is sad. People's moods are at an all time low. To avoid this, just afford a good laugh each day. Find humour in the little things. If laughing is tedious, smile. You never know who you will smile at and they will have a great day just because of your smile.
7. Socialise
Perhaps you are wondering what this means? In the office setting, people don't necessarily socialise. Everyone is doing what brought them there and are quick to head home as soon as they are done. Not many people would say they are close to their colleagues. We don't know what challenges our colleagues may be facing at home. Similarly, people don't know if you have challenges.
It is a great daily health habit to socialise especially with your loved ones. Make time to be with your family. This is perfect to get away from the hustle of making a living. Through family and loved ones, you get to appreciate what life has to offer. You count your blessings and just soak in each moment.
Leading a healthy lifestyle is an option each of us can make. It can be challenging however, since not many people appreciate healthy living. Or maybe they do, they are just not willing to put in the work. Therefore, be the agent of change. You can exemplify what healthy living is like. If you don't practise any of the above daily healthy habits, there is hope. Just practise with one. Increase your water intake or just sleep a bit better. With time, you will reap the benefits.

Healthy Living - Three Tips to Help Keep Your Joints Healthy

There is one health issue that will quickly take you out of the workout game: joint pain. You know how important it is to stay active as keeping active will help to ensure you maintain muscle strength and keep your physical fitness at an ideal level. As we become older, we lose lean muscle mass, but physical activity helps to prevent this loss.
When you start suffering from joint pain, however, things change. Now even walking up the stairs can feel like a challenge. The good news? You can get around this. By taking steps now, you can keep your joints moving well into your later years. Don't let creaky joints get you down. Here is how...
1. Avoid Activities Placing Stress On Your Joints. First, consider avoiding activities that will place a significant strain on your joints. For instance, running is not the best of options. Sure, it is ideal if you are looking to burn calories or boost your endurance, but for keeping your joints healthy, it is not the best of activities. Using a stationary cross trainer or swimming would be a better option.
Likewise, while weightlifting is excellent for promoting better health, it is not ideal if you are going for your maximum lifts multiple times a week. You may do it once in a while, but the rest of the time, lift more conservatively. You will still see benefits.
2. Keep Your Weight In Check. As often as you have heard this, it is time to listen to it again. Keeping your weight in check is a must for maintaining the elasticity, strength, and resilience of the cartilage in your joints. If you are carrying excess weight; it makes sense you are going to be at risk of developing joint pain. Stress is coming down on your joints consistently, and this is likely to cause you problems.
Just taking off ten pounds can make a big difference where joint pain is concerned. Try carrying ten pounds strapped to your back for an hour and see how you feel. When you take it off, you will feel so much better. That illustrates what your joints go through when you gain weight.
3. Consider Glucosamine and Chondroitin. These two supplements are ones you should consider taking if you are looking to prevent joint pain or are currently suffering from problems in your joints. They contain nutrients to benefit joint health and help improve your mobility. The research does not exactly know why these work, but Glucosamine is naturally produced in the body, and assists in the maintenance of healthy joint cartilage.
There you have a few leading points to keep in mind if you are looking to save your joints. Prevention is critical when it comes to joint health so make sure you are not overlooking all you could be doing.
Although managing Type 2 diabetes can be very challenging, it is not a condition you must just live with. Make simple changes to your daily routine - include exercise to help lower both your blood sugar levels and your weight.
For nearly 25 years Beverleigh Piepers has searched for and found a number of secrets to help you build a healthy body. Go to http://DrugFreeType2Diabetes.com to learn about some of those secrets.
The answer isn't in the endless volumes of available information but in yourself.

Does Lifting Weights Make Women Look Less Feminine?

So this is something I hear extremely often when speaking to new female clients in the gym. Many women's fitness regime consists of long session of cardio, with maybe a few very lightweight exercises with high reps. When I ask "why are you training the way you are"? The majority of the time the client will tell me that they are trying to lose some body fat and tone their physique.
Some go into more detail about how they want to tone their arms, have smaller well defined legs, or have a flatter stomach with some muscle tone underneath. Now, unfortunately, there is no such thing as spot reduction, it is physically impossible for a human being to lose body fat in one specific area of the body, but that is a whole new topic for another day.
I always ask whether they include any weight training in their program, and the majority of women say no, or yes, but with light weights and high reps. But why is this the case? More often than not many women avoid the weights area as they are afraid that lifting heavy will cause significant muscle gain, and after all they just want to tone. It's hard to discover where the idea of "toning" came from as in reality there is no such thing, you are either building muscle or not.
The toned look that many women strive for is established through weight training to build the muscle underneath and then losing the body fat over the top through a well structured nutrition program. Hours of cardio and high rep, low weight training is only going to leave you frustrated with little results. The majority of my female clients say they have avoided the weight in the past out of fear that they will become "bulky" or have muscles like men. While I'm sure we have all seen images of female bodybuilders, and I have massive respect for the hard work and dedication they put into their passion, it is impossible for women to look that way from a short period of weight training. If it was that easy then why doesn't every guy who lifts look like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Phil Heath?
While it is possible for a guy to build muscle quickly and easily, this isn't the case for women. But why is that? It all comes down to hormones. Testosterone is the main hormone that is responsible for building muscle, and while women do have some testosterone, it is no way near the level of males. Therefore it stands to reason that they can build some muscle, but not as much or as quick as guys.
So what does happen when women lift weights? They build muscle slowly which will help to improve their physique. More muscle tissue in the legs make the thighs and bum more shapely, and more development of the arms can help the fight against bingo wings. Building muscle tissue in the shoulders and back will create the illusion of a smaller waist and help create the hourglass fugue.
But what about body fat? While lifting weight will burn calories, the only way to lose body fat is to set up a calorie deficit, through a well-structured nutrition program, as mentioned in a previous blog "the one diet that actually works". If you decide you want to look more toned and therefore diet really hard to lose fat, with little muscle underneath, ultimately you end up with a skeleton. However, with some well-defined muscle, you will create that toned and "wonder woman" physique you are after.
So to conclude, women should lift weights as it will lead to the physique many women are after by building "toned" muscle and helping lose fat to get you in the best shape.

Why Fitness Is The Essence Of Overall Wellness
