Fitness Is About Health and Staying Healthy Is About Good Body Maintenance

Some are born with an inbuilt knowledge of what one's body needs. Others are easily misguided and led by fashion, popularity, and peer pressure into things that should be avoided. There is also the bodies willingness or otherwise to partake of harmful substances. In my case my body could not tolerate chemicals or anything that affected the brain. This was guided by my keen desire for knowledge and making my intelligence number one.
The lessons learned are that what we do when we are young has an impact on ageing and on what diseases and handicaps we will face as the years pile up. Good body maintenance is about avoiding anything toxic and that includes even dangerous rides at carnivals.
The latest fad is to take rides on vehicles that cause a drop and sudden stop, as in some crazy fairground roller coaster adventures. Watching one of these recently it was hard for me to believe that people not only put their own bodies at risk but that of their children in the name of having fun. The human brain is soft and very easily damaged.
The body warns of impending danger through the adrenalin glands and the sensation that many find addictive. As adrenalin flows it increases the heart rate and provides us with a flight or fight experience. In other words, it prepares for recovery from harm.
As the body jerks into a sudden stop the cranium and brain collide. This causes a degree of bruising and can even result in death or paralysis. But that doesn't have to happen immediately as delayed response may see the effects of concussion several hours or even a day after the event.
Headaches; nausea; dizziness; memory problems; irritability; as well as balance and sleeping difficulties may follow. Look at these symptoms and compare them to those of Alzheimer's or dementia patients. With the latter there are huge changes in brain functions that include memory loss. While there is no proven correlation to support the linking of the two it doesn't mean it is not correct.
Drugs also affect the brain and taking pills on a regular basis may also be leading to the onset of Alzheimer's or dementia. While there are no studies to prove this is the case it's still a matter of common sense.
If one is looking for a fitness regime then start with the brain and all other things will surely follow. It has the ability to tell us when we are going wrong. Drugs, on the other hand, interfere with that side of nature. We educate the brain by what we do to our bodies. If we stuff ourselves with things like sweets and alcohol, and tell it that the odd adrenalin rush is OK, then changes in that vital organ will impel us to take more of it.

3 Reasons Why Women Over 50 Should Lift Weight

Most of my clients are women over the age of 50. As a group, I can say that they are the hardest working and most dedicated clients that a personal trainer could ask for. Hard working, dedicated, and totally focused on getting better and stronger. Girls definitely rule when it comes to training.
The biggest request I get when starting with a new client is "I need to get rid of this fat around my (fill in the blank)". The impression is that if they do tons of crunches, they will lose the fat that has accumulated around their bellies. It doesn't quite work that way. Exercises targeting a specific part of the anatomy doesn't burn-up all the fat in that one area. Sorry.
In addition to accumulating a little extra padding in those "problem areas", there are other changes happening in your body after 50. Here are just a few of the most common adaptations to age:
• Menopause ends the childbearing years
• Gray hair replaces natural hair color
• Vision fades requiring reading glasses
• Gravity starts to take over as everything starts to sag a bit
• Skin loses it's normal elasticity and feels loose
• Thickness around the waist and hips start to form
I could go on, but let's stop there. There is no way to stop the natural aging process. At 59, I am amazed at how my body has changed over the past 20 years. With every 12-month turn of the calendar, I have to work harder to just keep-up. Since I know I cannot stop the aging process, my goal is to simply slow it down a bit, and that should be yours as well.
Perhaps one of the best ways to slow down the effects of aging after 50 is to lift weight. Now, I'm not talking about the little 2-pound dumbbells. I'm talking REAL weight. Here are 3 reasons why you need to lift weight after 50:
1. Bone Density
You think drinking milk and taking calcium supplements is going to keep your bones strong and hold off the dreaded "hump back" caused by osteoporosis? Think again.
The best way to build strong bones is by lifting heavy weight. Think about it for a second - When you pick up something heavy, your brain (being the super smart computer it is) determines that you need a little more thickness in that arm-bone or else it will snap like a twig. So, when you consistently hoist heavy weight, growth hormone is produced and new bone cells created to increase the density and strength of the skeletal structure(your arm).
This is called "anatomical adaptation", and it is the fastest and best way to get your bones strong.
2. Burn Fat
Would you like to turn you body into a little "fat burning machine"? No problem. Just start lifting heavy weight. When you lift weight, your body produces lean muscle mass, which takes calories to support. This increases your basal metabolic rate and helps you to burn more calories during the day.
The more muscle you build, the more calories you burn. If the body does not have a ready source of sugar available, it will start utilizing body fat for energy. This is where good nutrition comes in. But needless to say, if you are lifting weight and building lean muscle, you will reduce the fat around your waist, hips, thighs, and arms.
3. Feel Awesome
I know this one doesn't sound very scientific, but lifting weight will elevate your mood and make you feel like you can do anything.
Seriously.
When you lift heavy weight, your body produces endorphins, which interact with the receptors in your brain and reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a "positive feeling" in your body similar to that of morphine. In essence, you get "high" when you workout with weights.
Lifting weight is less dangerous and certainly less expensive than taking drugs, both legal and illegal. It is very cool for me to be greeted at the door with a scowl (I'm not in the mood to train) only to have my client give me a huge energized smile when I leave. Yup, those endorphin thing really do work.
So, if you are a woman over 50, then give lifting weight a try. My advice is to work with certified personal trainer who can show you the right exercises and how to do them safely. A good trainer will also help you progress the movements and weight so that you keep getting stronger. If you need any help, just let me know.

Benefits of Dance for Older People

Dancing is a past time enjoyed by many both young and old across the world on a daily basis. Whether it is dancing whilst listening to music whilst doing the housework or attending a weekly salsa class the beauty of dance is that it is really for everyone and can be enjoyed at any time.
However we would like to highlight the benefits of dance particularly for older adults.
Promotes physical activity
Older people are less likely to exercise however those who partake in regular physical activity are more likely to live longer as they maintain their balance, strength gait and cardiovascular health. Dance is great for older adults as it is a low level exercise that works all of the body from head to toe and encourages moving through a space, gets the heart pumping and provides the opportunity to gently move and stretch.
Promotes cognitive function
Older people typically experience a progressive decline in cognitive ability, memory and reaction time as they age. Learning dance steps and sequences can be mentally demanding and is a skill that needs to be developed but dancers are known to maximize cognitive function and muscle memory through practice. Dance also challenges reaction time and perception because of the quick thinking that is required to remember what step comes next.
Promotes Social Inclusion
Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Dance is a social activity where people meet weekly and form friendships. The best dance classes are the ones where the dancers go and have a coffee and a chat afterwards reducing the feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Improves mental wellbeing
Older people are more vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems, with depression affecting around 22% of men and 28% of women aged 65 years and over. Dance can help to reduce stress, increases levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and helps to develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition. Dance which is a meaningful activity can also encourage individuals to focus on activity for a sustained period and help individuals feel a sense of achievement when they have learnt the steps to a challenging routine.
Promotes self-expression
Older people may not get the opportunity to express their creativity and perhaps are no longer self-aware. Dancing can be powerful energy release that can release tension and provide you with the opportunity to explore your own range of movement and feelings. If you choose to dance to music then there are the added benefits of having songs as a stimulus which can also enhance your mood and also perhaps encourage reminisce.
So dust off your dancing shoes and Keep Dancing.

Why Fitness Is The Essence Of Overall Wellness

https://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Fitness-Is-The-Essence-Of-Overall-Wellness&id=9819816
If you are looking forward to overall wellness, then you have got to know that fitness is the essence of it. Unlike the popular perception, achieving fitness is not that difficult. You can't judge the fitness of a person by just looking at that person. Experiences have taught me that the fittest looking person might not be the one who impresses you with his or her fitness levels. So, it's pointless to have unrealistic views about fitness. As far as fitness is concerned, the health of your heart is extremely important. Probably, you lack a typically "fit" looking body. But that doesn't mean that you are not fit. You can be fit irrespective of the way your body looks. Cardio fitness is the real measure for fitness. If you are really serious about fitness, then you have to channel your energies to improve the health of your heart. When your heart is healthy, other aspects like increased lung capacity, strong bones, strong muscles, weight loss etc. will follow.
Understanding the concept of fitness
In today's world obsessed with fitness, we have complicated the concept of fitness. According to the basic definition, fitness is all about your ability carry out your daily chores without fatigue. A fit person will be able to carry out his chores with alertness and vigour. Back in the day, people used to have that ability. They were all physically active. They were all fit. So, there was no need to talk about fitness. However, things have changed a lot. Lifestyle diseases have become common these days. We do very less physical activities as our jobs force us to stay glued to our seats all day long with zero physical activity. And that has contributed to lot of lifestyle diseases. No wonder why we talk about fitness more these days because we are all worried about our fitness levels. Lack of physical activities made us susceptible to all sorts of health problems.
Significance of fitness
The sedentary lifestyle has made way for lot of diseases. And people have realized the significance of regular exercise to stay fit. However, not too many are able to follow it given the hectic lifestyle. If you want to stay away from many diseases, then it is important to do cardio exercise on a regular basis. As we all know, heart disease has been one of the notorious silent killers. Stroke, diabetes, colon cancer etc. are other diseases which are connected to lack of fitness. There are plenty of benefits for regular exercise. Besides the health benefits, you will be able to control your weight as well. In turn, you will be able to fight aging too.
Psychological benefits of exercise
Exercise has many psychological benefits as well. When you exercise, it releases the feel good hormone endorphins, which significantly reduces stress. And it will elevate your mood as well. It has the ability to fight depression as well. If you are one those fitness freaks who exercise on a daily basis, then you will have a positive attitude towards life. Also, you tend to have better self-esteem. Exercise gives you better sleep at night. You never complain about fatigue either. Last but not least, regular exercise can improve your memory as well.
The amount of exercise to stay fit
Well, this has been a hotly debated topic for years. Different people will give different advice. But one thing is definite - regular exercise is the best strategy. How long should you exercise? Well, 30 minutes a day would be more than enough. And if you are able to extend to an hour then it is better. Some people would suggest that doing exercise 5 times a week is a good strategy. Well, doing it every day is a far more effective strategy. Exercise is like drinking coffee. Your brain gets addicted to the feel good hormones and craves for it every day. For the same reason, your brain will remind you to do exercise every day. That's like following a natural clock. Your brain knows what is best for your body. Therefore, doing it every day will make it easier for you to get adjusted to the natural cycle.
Remember, fitness is the key to your overall well-being. So, it is time for you to embrace it!

How Massage Helps More Than Just Muscles

Think of massage and your mind will probably conjure up images of smouldering candles, soft ivory fluffy towels and all things that ooze rest and relaxation. But while massage is a popular way for many people to unwind, it also has some incredible health benefits.
Here are just a few that may surprise you:
1: It can help with lower back pain
Massage can be an effective way to treat both acute and chronic lower back pain and is often combined with other holistic exercises. Many people who book a massage do so to help alleviate pain, stiffness and soreness as a result of a chronic health condition or injury.
2: It can lower high blood pressure
Massage is widely believed to be an effective way to help control blood pressure and pre-hypertension. Getting regular massage treatment can encourage relaxation, which can help to maintain healthy blood pressure pressure levels.
3: It can help with depression and anxiety
Massage therapy is an effective way to help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as the fatigue that is often associated with such conditions. It is widely believed that depression can lead to heightened muscle pain and tension. Massage can result in improvements in patients displaying chronic pain and muscle tension. It can also help to reverse the depression cycle and improve energy levels.
4: It can help to regulate diabetes
Massage therapy has been used to help manage diabetes for over 100 years. It can be helpful in promoting relaxation, reducing the risk of neuropathy and helping to restore the correct use of insulin. Massage is now a popular alternative medicine for many conditions.
5: It can help to prevent injuries
Specific types of massages, such as sports massages, can play a role in supporting athletic performance and aid injury recovery while helping to prevent future injuries such as ligament traumas.
So how exactly does massage work?
Massage combines the benefits of soft tissue manipulation and the release of chemicals due to the relaxation response. Improved circulation enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body's muscular cells. As cellular health improves, tissues can function more efficiently.
Applying pressure to the skin helps to relax muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The release of superficial layers of muscles may also affect deeper layers which can lead to both sets of muscles becoming more balanced.
When muscles, bones, or nerves are distressed, organs can sometimes become affected. Massage can benefit organs as they share neurological pathways with these muscles, bones and nerves.
Fancy a relaxing massage to unwind after a hard day's work? You could end up giving your health a boost at the same time!

7 Main Reasons to Drink More Water

"Water is the driving force of all nature" - Leonardo Da Vinci
Water, the liquid life. It makes up 60% of your body, 75% of your muscles and 85% of your brain. It's the lubricant that is involved in nearly every chemical process that takes place inside your cells.
Water is clearly the most important nutrient for the human body, but we often take it for granted. Opting for soda, fruit juice, alcohol, coffee, or tea over boring old water. That's likely the reason why 75% of Americans are suffering from chronic dehydration. There's just so many other options!
Interestingly enough, even though water is so important for the body, there's not much scientific research dedicated to learning more about water and how it affects human health. That's because water is very cheap for most developed countries. Water's health benefits don't increase the bottom line of the giant pharmaceutical companies that usually fund health research. The few research articles that I did find were actually done by bottled water companies such as Evian, meaning that even this research may be slightly biased.
Nonetheless, water is a necessary and fundamental part of being healthy and it's importance should not be underestimated. Making sure to drink the right type of water and plenty of it is crucial to achieving your health goals. Here are the 7 Main Reasons to Drink more water. Let's dive in.
The 7 Main Reasons to Drink More Water
#1 - Water Helps You Lose Weight
Everyone wants to look good and be in shape. The EASIEST way to do that is to drink more water. Here are the two main ways that water can help you lose weight or maintain optimal weight.
Water Reduces Cravings
In the centrehttps://ezinearticles.com/?7-Main-Reasons-to-Drink-More-Water&id=9651876 of your brain, there is an area called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is responsible for regulating hormones in the body, controlling body temperature, and the sensations of hunger and thirst. Since your feelings of hunger and thirst are supplied from the same area of your brain, you may sometimes mistake your thirstiness for your desire to munch on something. That's why if you get a craving for food, you should try drinking a glass of water and waiting 15 minutes. Most of the time the craving should go away and you reduce your calorie intake, which helps you lose weight.
Water Stimulates Your Metabolism (Burning of Calories)
Did you know that drinking water stimulates your metabolism and increases your calorie burn? Especially if you drink cold water. Drinking cold water forces your body to burn calories to warm up the water to body temperature. Really any water that you drink needs to be processed and transported to the rest of your body.
Research showed that in 14 healthy and in-shape individuals, drinking 500ml of water increased their metabolism by 30% in just 10 minutes. Another study showed that drinking 2 liters of water a day could increase calorie burn by up to 400 calories. A short-term study of overweight women showed that the women who drank more than 1 liter of water a day over 12 months, lost an extra 4lbs of weight without any other lifestyle changes.
Water needs to be processed and transported to be used by the body, which requires energy. More energy demand causes an increase in metabolic rate. Just by drinking more water you'll burn more fat and get leaner. It's like the best natural fat-loss product. A Zero-Calorie food!
#2 - Water Increases Your Mental and Physical Performance
Fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. Even if you lose just 1-2% of your body weight in water, it can impair physical and mental performance. That's because everything that goes on in your body and brain requires water.
Physical Performance
If you exercise regularly, you need to hydrate even more than the normal sedentary human being. You lose water rapidly through your sweat and your breath when you exercise. It has been shown that athletes often lose 6-10% of their body weight in water during competition and intense training. Dehydration during training results in reduced endurance, increased fatigue, reduced motivation, and increased perceived effort. All of which negatively impacts performance.
The good news is that proper rehydration reverses all of these negative effects and even reduces oxidative stress caused by exercise and dehydration. Make sure to hydrate before, during, and after exercise to aid in recovery and maximize your performance. A solid workout with maximum effort also means more calories burned, resulting in a leaner and better you.
Mental Performance
Even just mild dehydration curbs cognitive functions such as concentration, alertness and short term memory in everyone including children (10-12 years), young adults (18-25 years) and (50-82 years). The brain is 85% water, so staying adequately hydrated is important to ensure proper functioning of your brain. In the morning, instead of going straight for coffee, try drinking 500ml of water as soon as you wake up. It will help kicks tart your day and get you going faster. When that afternoon snooze starts creeping, try drowning it with water. Water, not coffee, is the key to sustained energy throughout the day.
#3 - Water Improves Your Skin Health
The skin is the largest organ of your body and contains 30% water, which contributes to the plumpness and elasticity of skin. Drinking more water can improve skin thickness and density, helping your skin look more youthful, smooth, and firm. Choosing water instead of inflammatory drinks such as sugary sodas, processed fruit juice, caramel macchiatos, and even milk will help you achieve clearer skin. These inflammatory drinks cause spikes in blood sugar which messes up your hormones and leads to unwanted breakouts. Be conscious of what you drink, especially for the sake of your skin.
#4 - Water Helps Detoxify your Body
There are so many toxins that you come into contact with everyday from processed food, household chemicals, environmental pollutants, etc. It's your kidney's job to filter out your blood and remove toxic waste. The kidneys depend on plenty of fluid available in your body so that even if you lose fluid through your urine, your body can function optimally. Give your kidneys adequate water, they can efficiently work and remove all the toxins from your blood. The more dehydrated you are, the harder your kidneys have to work to fit all the toxins into a small amount of urine. Leading to the darker and darker shades of yellow in your urine. The easiest way to make sure you're getting enough water is to drink enough water until your urine is crystal clear. This will help your kidneys remove toxins from your body efficiently, and you will feel great!
#5 - Water Helps Minimize Joint Pain and Muscle Pain
Your joints are the hinges where two bones come together. Between your bones is a coating of cartilage which provides a cushion between the your bones to prevent friction.
Joints are like sponges. Wet sponges move easily against each other while hard sponges can rub and break off. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your sponges (cartilage) are hydrated and soft, minimizing joint discomfort. That's what glucosamine and other joint supplements are designed to do, retain more moisture in your cartilage. You can do this naturally by drinking more water.
Muscle pain is a slightly different issue. If you work out or lift weights, there's a build-up of lactic acid and microtears in your muscle fibers that cause pain. Drinking plenty of water flushes out the lactic acid, and transports nutrients to your muscles (assuming that you're eating nutritious diet) that will help repair muscles quicker and reduce muscle pain. Drinking more water means faster and more efficient recovery.
#6 - Water Makes You Happier
The more water your drink, the better your mood will be. If your body is running efficiently on plenty of water, you'll have more energy and be in a better mood. A study on 120 healthy female college students showed that the girls who drank more water on average had less tension, depression, and confusion.
Another study on 30 people who drank five cups of water a day showed that when the same people were asked to increase water intake to ten cups a day their mood, energy, and satisfaction all improved. DRINK MORE WATER, it will make you happier.
#7 - Water Helps You Digest and Poop
Your digestive tract is where everything goes to gain entrance into your body, including water. Keeping this area nice and moist is good for your digestion.
Water Aids Digestion
Everything that you eat lands in your stomach first and waits there to be broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes. The rate at which digested food then moves into your intestines from your stomach is mostly determined by the volume of food & fluid that is in the stomach at the time. After your stomach breaks down the food, it empties into the small intestine, where most of the nutrients and water are absorbed. The more water that is available, the better the absorption.
However, there's a constant debate among health professionals on whether or not drinking water with meals positively or negatively affects digestion. On one hand, it's theorized that drinking water during meals dilutes your stomach acid and enzymes leading to poor breakdown of nutrients and causes limited absorption. On the other hand, drinking water is said to aid in moving food through your digestive tract quickly and smoothly.
So in order to cover both sides of the argument, here's the best way to drink water for proper digestion.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you don't have to gulp down water right before you eat.
  • Take small sips of water (preferably room temperature or warm) during meals.
  • Make sure to beginning hydrating again 30 minutes after your meal to give time for your body to digest the food you ate.
Water Relieves Constipation
Constipation is caused by dehydration in your colon. After water and nutrients from your food gets absorbed in your small intestines, it moves into your large intestine also known as the colon. Your colon is where extra water is added or removed to produce stool. More water means smoother stool while less water means firmer stool. If you are dehydrated, your colon will absorb more water from your stool, leading to constipation. Women and older adults especially struggle with constipation because they do not drink enough water, and/or drink coffee/tea instead of water.
A study of 3,835 Japanese women from the ages of 18-20 showed that low intake of water was directly associated with increased instances of constipation. Similarly, in elderly people, low fluid intake was found to be the direct cause of constipation.
Constipation is a very serious health issue. Continued constipation means you're not eliminating toxic waste from your body, and most of those toxins get reabsorbed. Leading to bad skin, fatigue, and overall poor health. Drink plenty of water to reduce constipation and live a healthier life.
Now that you are armed with the knowledge of how important water is to power the best version of you, make it a habit to drink more water! Just drinking more water will go a long way in helping you achieve your health goals. Stay hydrated!

Our bodies gradually begin to adapt to our daily routines and then the downhill battle begins. There are ways to incorporate exercise into our daily lives without it taking up too much time and energy.
Before beginning any type of exercise routine, it is best to speak with your personal physician to be sure that the exercise is good for your health and any predisposed conditions.
Beginning slowly is the key when it comes to beginning an exercise routine. Exercising does not have to cost an arm and leg and there are routines that can cost you very little. Things like taking a walk a couple of times a day take nothing but your time. Of course, it is important to dress appropriately for the weather where you live and walk.
Exercise at Home or the Gym
Nowadays, there are many people who do not want to go to the nearest gym. Whether you are uncomfortable being in front of others or just do not want to pay for a gym membership the option to exercise at home is always available.
There are many choices for exercise equipment that can be used right at home. Many stores carry a large supply of equipment and clothing for every level of fitness. Below are a few examples of the equipment and accessories available from this company.
  • Waist Trimmers: These beauties make it possible to have a thinner waist without having to take time out of your busy schedule and can be used in addition to your workout routine. Waist trimmers can add extra back support when you are working out and add heat to the area to help burn fat faster. These belts are comfortable and are made with materials that can breathe.
  • Indoor Bike Trainers: For those of us who love to ride bikes these bike trainers are an ideal way to exercise. Of course, the weather and time may not always be on our side, so the use of a bike trainer allows us to exercise when we want whether it is too dark outside or too cold.
  • Running Shoes: Sports equipment stores and shoe stores carry the best when it comes to running shoes. It is very important to wear good running shoes while out jogging to avoid injury to our feet and body.
  • Treadmills: This is a must have if you are serious about your exercise routine. Using a treadmill daily to walk or run allows you to still be able to exercise even if the weather is too hot or too cold. Treadmills have become more affordable over the past few years and are becoming a staple in many households.
Whether you are planning on walking, running, or even playing basketball there is a company out there to help you acquire the gear you need at very affordable prices. Many sports equipment offers up-to-date reviews on the best options available for your exercise routine.

Get A Stronger Grip

In my work as a personal trainer, I am constantly trying to help people strengthen their weakest link. For bodybuilders this is always a lagging body part. For people who are primary interested in getting stronger--in simply lifting more weight in more lifts--I can almost always help them increase their overall strength by helping them get a stronger grip.
For strength trainees, the grip is often the equivalent of the weakest body part for the physique competitors. Here's why: it often gets neglected. How many times have you seen a man with a giant upper body and skinny little legs? Well, he has been neglecting to work on his legs. Therefore, his legs hinder his goal of overall physique development. He can never look any better than his legs do in a competition.
With someone trying to develop brute strength, the hands are often the neglected part of the equation. I have one client who wants to be able to dead lift 500 pounds. What is ironic is that his back and legs are already strong enough to lift that much weight--he just can't hold onto it. The barbell falls out of his hands because his grip is not strong enough.
It doesn't necessarily act as a hindrance simply to those wanting to increase their max strength. If you want to be able to lift more total volume during a session, then hand fatigue in a movement like a dumbbell row can also be your limiting factor.
Strong hands are useful. That's the core of this article. Whether you're an athlete, a laborer, or you just want to be as healthy as possible, there is no downside to developing hand strength. Here are a couple of exercises to get you started:
The plate curl
This is just a normal bicep curl, but holding a weight plate instead of a dumbbell or barbell. Pinch a 10-25 lb plate between the thumb and the four fingertips. Now curl the weight approximately to chin level without letting the wrist bend.
grippers
I'm not talking about the little plastic grippers you can buy at Wal Mart. I'm talking about heavy duty torsion grippers like the Captains of Crush grippers from Iron https://ezinearticles.com/?Get-A-Stronger-Grip&id=5056623mind, or David Horne's Vulcan grip tools.
Heavy grippers look like others that you have seen, but they have hundreds of pounds of resistance, not dozens. Hence, they can't be worked for high reps or frequent sessions.
summary
It is simple--just use your hands more and focus on strength. Can you do more weight in a hand exercise than you could last week. Then you are stronger. Can you do more reps than you used to be able to? Then you are stronger.
Repeat until strong, then keep going. You won't be sorry.
When I'm not trying to get a stronger grip you can find me strength training in my garage or working with others. I'm a passionate amateur with 10 years of experience. Lift heavy and be happy!

Exercise - The Fountain of Youth?

Let's face it. Our bodies change as we get older. We don't exercise as much. We lose muscle mass. This slows down our metabolism and lowers our energy level. Our balance starts to suffer.
None of this happens overnight. It's a slow, gradual part of the ageing process. And, an inevitable part of the agehttps://ezinearticles.com/?Exercise---The-Fountain-of-Youth?&id=9814782ing process... or is it?
The Mayo Clinic released some startling results early this year. They published a study on the anti-ageing effects of exercise. Not only did high intensity interval training (otherwise known as HIIT) affect cardio, but it also affected aging. The study compared the effects of HIIT, resistance training, and combined training. I have to tell you, I love resistance training, but it did not show the same anti-aging advantage as HIIT and combined training.
WHAT THE STUDY FOUND
In addition to improving overall fitness, fast-paced, aerobic interval exercise also made changes on the cellular level! This is really exciting news. HIIT actually enhanced the cellular machinery that creates new proteins!
Resistance training is still important, because provides the best muscle development. But, if you had to choose just one, HIIT would give you the best overall benefit.
The take home message if you are over 50 -- now is the time to start interval training. See your doctor first for a physical examination. And make sure you start at a level appropriate to your current fitness level.
BENEFITS OF TRAINING:
  • improved cardio, muscle mass, blood sugar
  • improved mitochondrial cellular function
  • improved skeletal muscle gene expression
Again, resistance training is still important for increased muscle strength! In fact, the best overall results according to the Mayo Clinic were from combined training, using HIIT and resistance. This being the case, I recommend at least two days of resistance training a week.
RECOMMENDED ROUTINE
A good program might be HIIT training Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Resistance training Tuesday and Thursday. Flexibility training Saturday. And Sunday as a rest day. This would provide a balanced anti-aging exercise program. You can easily adapt these exercises for any fitness level.

Maintain Your Muscle Mass As You Age With These 5 Easy Tips

Sarcopenia, the muscular equivalent of osteoporosis, is age-related muscular deterioration. It starts when you turn 40, and causes a decline of roughly 1% per year. At 50, it picks up speed, so unless you started with a good amount of muscle mass, you could see a muscle loss of as much as 50% by the time you're 75 - really! There is good news though - you can stave off muscle weakening if you start right now - today.
1) Move it or lose it! Stretch and Exercise!
Don't just sit there - move it, bend it, lift it or work it. During TV commercials, do squats to strengthen your hamstrings and quads. Keep a set of low weight dumbbells or resistance bands by your office chair do a couple of arm reps every hour. If you totally don't know how to get started, hire a personal trainer (one who's experienced working with 'mature' adults!) for one hour to set up a lifting routine customized for you. "Without question, resistance exercise is the most powerful intervention to address muscle loss," says Nathan K. LeBrasseur, Ph.D., of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic. Exercise increases strength, aerobic capacity and muscle protein synthesis and should be your first line of defense in slowing down sarcopenia.
2) Eat quality protein!
Protein repairs and rebuilds muscle fiber. Not sure how much protein you should consume in a day? Take your body weight in pounds, divide it in half and subtract 10. If you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 65 grams of protein per day, spread more or less evenly across your meals and snacks. (Note that if you have renal issues, check with your doctor first.) The type of protein you eat counts too. The best sources are grass-fed beef, whey protein, lentils, wild-caught fish like salmon and tuna and organic chicken.
3) Increase your consumption of omega-3's!
Put simply, omega-3 fatty acids influence muscle protein metabolism and mitochondrial physiology in human aging. A 2011 study's objective was to evaluate the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on the rate of muscle protein synthesis in older adults. The results showed that dietary omega-3 fatty acid supplementation increased the rate of muscle protein synthesis in older adults - so buy those omega-3-enriched eggs and add some flax seed and fish oils to your meals. Omega 3 Essential Oils
4) Eat a Mediterranean-style diet!
Decrease your consumption of inflammatory foods, like high fructose corn syrup, trans fats and processed foods, and increase your intake of leafy green vegetables, berries, mono-saturated fats like olive oil, walnuts and salmon. Cut out simple sugars and increase complex carbohydrates. In other words, eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. An easy way to accomplish this is to shop the outside aisles of your supermarket - that's where the good stuff lives!
5) Watch the booze and quit smoking!!
Alcohol can weaken your muscles if it's overly consumed. However, some of the healthiest people in the world consume red wine on a daily basis with no ill effect. Today the rule of thumb is to limit yourself to two alcoholic drinks per day if you're male, and one if you're female. As for smoking, you've heard all the reasons why you shouldn't, so just don't. We're surprised there are still people out there who continue to burn their money while inhaling it!
To sum up - do your stretching, resistance exercises and eat well - and your muscle deterioration should be minimal.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga In Anti Ageing Progression

Yoga may have a profound and positive effect in anti aging progression, some renowned institute studies suggested.
Aging is a natural process of growing old.
Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
According to the study to explore the impact of yoga and meditation based lifestyle intervention (YMLI) on cellular aging in 96 healthy individuals randomly assigned to a 12-weeks of YMLI, at the end of 12 weeks of lesson, YMLI group expressed significant improvements in both the cardinal biomarkers of cellular aging and the metabotrophic biomarkers influencing cellular aging in compared to baseline values.
The efficacy of the program in reduced cellular aging process was attributed to the activities in decreased production of ROS and pro inflammatory cytokins and hormone cortisol, and increased mean values of telomerase activity in regulated aging progression and hormone β-endorphin in reduced stress and maintain homeostasis.
Dr. Madhuri Tolahunase, the led author, after taking into account of other co founders, said,"Lifestyle is an integrated entity, and an intervention, like YMLI, that has overall positive influence on our health appears most useful versus changing only one aspect at a time, as is seen by action of certain drugs. Yoga is holistic and a mind-body medicine and is more beneficial and advantageous than individual interventions like physical exercise, caloric restriction, and antioxidants".
Other researchers, in the study of yoga breathing in protected skin against aging, filed the following results
1. Yoga breathing reduced psychological aspects of stress and anxiety which have been found to associate to promoted aging
2. Yoga also expressed an impact in regulated advanced glycation end products (AGE) which have recently been shown to play a role in tissue aging
3. Comprehensive yoga program including breathing and meditative exercises may have a profound effect in enhanced gene expression involving oxidative stress, DNA damage, cell cycle control, aging and apoptosis and
4. Detoxification
In further analysis, Dr, Beri K the led author said, "(Contract to general belief)The interesting correlation of insulin regulation and glucose control can be translated to improvement and maybe reversal of the effects on AGE protein accumulation in the body tissue".
In support of the above differentiation, Dr. Brown RP at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, launched an investigation of yoga breathing in anti aging progression, suggested that
1. Yoga breathing (pranayama) can have a significant and positive effect in bringing the mind to the present moment and reduce stress
2. Yoga breathing delayed the aging process through reduced expression of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and for victims of mass disasters.
3. The practices also relieved many forms of suffering.
Finally, after taking account of other risk factors, researchers concluded that yoga breathing can affect longevity mechanisms.
Taking altogether, Yoga used alone or combined with meditation may have a therapeutic effect in aging progression through regulating cellular and psychological expressions

Exercises and Workouts - What Is Your Motivation to Exercise?

The hardest part of exercising is not doing the activity; more often than not, it is getting started. Physics dictates it takes more energy to put an object that is at rest into motion than it is to continue the action once it has begun. It is only natural this applies to exercise as well.
Is it because of motivation (or lack of motivation) exercise is so difficult to get stuck into? To be more specific we are talking about the long-term. Anybody can go for a walk or a run, or a one-off workout without much difficulty. Advising people to exercise because it will burn fat and make them feel better, can often be enough incentive to get them moving. But getting them to repeat this, and exercise at least three times a week, every week - now that is a task easier said than done.
Is it challenging, however, to make time to exercise at least three times a week? Unless you are part of a minority of individuals, you most certainly have the time and the ability to do this. But you may still struggle, despite this being your intent and something you are fully capable of doing.
Could your struggle be due to lack of motivation? You may think you do not have any motivation, or what you do have is insufficient. Perhaps: but it could also be for other reasons. Motivation is a big one, though.
If your drive to exercise is at a peak, you are going to make fewer excuses. When you do make excuses, however, you will be quick to overcome them. You will go out of your way to workout - even unreasonably so at times. But at least you will be exercising. You can always dial it back a notch if it begins to overwhelm you or take over other parts of your life.
In contrast, not exercising at all poses serious consequences. If you feel your motivation is lacking, you need to ask yourself why you want to exercise, to begin with. In reality, this is an unnecessary question. You ought to exercise for your well-being. It is a necessity. Maybe you don't realishttps://ezinearticles.com/?Exercises-and-Workouts---What-Is-Your-Motivation-to-Exercise?&id=9876226e it yet, or don't want the benefits of physical activity badly enough.
We cannot convince you to exercise. But maybe we can assure you it is wise not to wait until it is too late to realise you should. It needs to be a part of your life, albeit a small part. Again, three times a week is enough for most people. No need to get crazy.
Build some motivation for yourself by realising the necessity of exercise. You have more to lose than to gain by being inactive.
Although managing Type 2 diabetes can be very challenging, it is not a condition you must just live with. Make simple changes to your daily routine - include exercise to help lower both your blood sugar levels and your weight.
For nearly 25 years, Beverleigh Piepers has searched for and found a number of secrets to help you build a healthy body. Go to http://DrugFreeType2Diabetes.com to learn about some of those secrets.
The answer isn't in the endless volumes of available information but in yourself.
