The main benefit of walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. It is also good for your heart, head, and your wallet as you do not require anything extra and you do not have to pay for expensive gyms.
You can skip your ride and walk to your work or schools and shops. In some cases, walking can be more effective than running to reduce the risk of heart disease. Walking not only minimizes the risk of heart disease but also can help you lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Taking a 15-30 minute daily walk can be equal to as 150 minutes of weekly exercise.
Walking has lots of physical benefits as well as mental benefits:

Belly Fat and Its Ill-Effects on Health
Belly fat is an accumulation of excessive fat around the stomach and abdomen up to the extent that it is likely to have a negative impact on health. Abdominal obesity is not confined only to the elderly and obese subjects. On the other hand, one can be thin and still have abdominal fat if one is not fit.
Basically, abdominal fat is of two types:
Subcutaneous fat - Subcutaneous fat is the fat just under the skin. If one is wondering why one cannot see six-pack abs, it is probably because subcutaneous fat is covering them.
Visceral fat - Visceral fat is sometimes also called intra-abdominal fat. This is because visceral fat is found between our organs in the midsection.
Both types of belly fat have a negative impact on individual health.
Abdominal obesity results in an "apple-shaped" body type, which is more common among men. Women typically accumulate fat around the hips and thighs to develop a "pear-shaped" body type. They can certainly develop "apple-shaped" body types as well.
Evaluation of belly fat -
The two most common ways to measure abdominal obesity are waist circumference and waist size compared to hip size, also known as the waist-to-hip ratio. The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is calculated by dividing the waist circumference by the hip circumference.
In males, WHR less than 0.90 - 0.95 is considered average but less than 0.85 is considered excellent. Waist measurement of more than 102 cm. (40 in.) is considered unacceptable in men.
In females, WHR less than 0.80 - 0.85 is considered average but less than 0.75 is considered excellent. Waist measurement of more than 88 cm. (35 in.) is considered unacceptable in women.
The most accurate method is to use computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the amount of abdominal fat. But they're expensive and require sophisticated equipment.
Ill-effects of belly fat on health -
Abdominal obesity has a number of ill-effects on our health as mentioned below:
Chronic inflammation - The researchers have confirmed that fat cells inside the abdomen are secreting molecules that increase inflammation. Abdominal fat secrets high levels of an important inflammatory molecule called interleukin-6 (IL-6) into the blood. Increased IL-6 levels in the blood correlate with concentrations of an inflammatory substance called C-reactive protein (CRP) in the body. High CRP levels are related to inflammation, and chronic inflammation, which can lead to a host of diseases.
Pre-diabetes - Carrying a high amount of abdominal fat is known to be associated with insulin resistance, which can lead to glucose intolerance. The condition is called pre-diabetes, which can lead to type-2 diabetes.
Heart disease - Many studies have shown that people who carry excess abdominal fat around their midsection -- a so-called "spare tire" -- tend to face higher risks of heart disease compared to people who have fat elsewhere.
Cancer - Obese people often have chronic low-level inflammation, which can, over time, cause DNA damage that leads to cancer. Belly fat releases proteins that fuel the growth of malignant (cancerous) cells. The research gives a new insight that excess visceral fat may promote cancerous change by releasing a protein called fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2), thus uncovering links between belly fat and cancers of the colon, esophagus, and pancreas.
Cholesterol irregularities - Blood lipid irregularities associated with abdominal obesity include high levels of triglycerides and reduced levels of HDL cholesterol, which causes an increase in the triglyceride to HDL cholesterol ratio.
Alzheimer's disease - There is evidence to suggest that abdominal obesity has a strong link with Alzheimer's disease or dementia because it has a strong correlation with many metabolic conditions.
A low backache - The core of the body is the center of gravity, which will shift due to excess abdominal weight. The shift will pull the body forward in an unnatural posture, potentially straining the lower back.
The bottom line -
It is a well-known fact that excess body fat has serious consequences for health. Despite the excess body weight, the issue is not how much one weighs, but how much abdominal fat one has.

Exercises and Workouts - Exercise Modifications To Make Past The Age Of 40
If you are in your 40's, 50's or beyond, you may be wondering what this means for your workout program. Can you still do the workouts you have always done? Or will you need to make adjustments?
As you get older, there is no question specific changes take place in your body. If you want to continue to stay active into these years, you will need to modify things a little. The good news is if you keep up with your fitness, you will not need to adjust as much, as your body will maintain itself quite well.
Let us look at a few of the modifications you will want to consider making...
1. Reduced Total Volume. First, consider cutting back slightly how much volume you are doing. While before you may have been able to do four sets per exercise for instance, now you may want to limit it to just three. As long as you push yourself on those three, you should still see excellent results.
As you get older, your recovery ability is not what it used to be so a high volume program may be a little too much for you to take on.
2. Exercise Selection. Next, consider your exercise selection. You want to do everything you can to safeguard your joints so choose joint friendly movements. For example, leg extensions tend to be quite hard on your knee joint so you may prefer something like the leg press instead.
Or, rather than going for a run for cardio exercise, try using a stationary machine instead. These small adjustments can pay off regarding keeping you pain-free in the months ahead.
3. Functional Movements. As you get older, your goals will also likely change. While previously you may have been very focused on the aesthetics of things, now you may be more interested in just ensuring you can keep up with your favorite activities as the years pass by. As such, you want to look at functional fitness more closely: this means choosing exercises to perform in your routine that is going to mimic best the movement patterns you use in everyday life activities. If you do that, you should be able to keep up with all you love doing.
If you keep these three slight adjustments in mind as you go about your program and focus on learning to read your body and all it's telling you, you should have no problem staying active for many years to come.
Although managing Type 2 diabetes can be very challenging, it is not a condition you must just live with. Make simple changes to your daily routine - include exercise to help lower both your blood sugar levels and your weight.

What Is Successful Ageing?
With all the exercise and fitness advice out there for the after fifty-year old individuals, there is so much conflicting information out there on what precisely we should do to have a healthy older age.
We have all heard that you should exercise and eat healthy. And most of us try to do that as much as we can. We toil and rush to the gym so that we could get that workout in so that we could check off or schedules. But is it really worth it in the long run?
I believe that it is worth exercising and eating right to be healthy in our older years. However, I think some of us turn it into an obsession where we just keep going to the gym, spending hours, and try to look like we did when we were twenty and thirty years old.
This kind of obsessive mindset is very unhealthy and should be curbed for us to have a healthy older age. We must find a way to balance being healthy in a world of extremes where, on the one hand, we are encouraged to eat all the wrong foods for us through advertisements, and on the other hand, we are drilled to go to the gym for 2 hours every day so that we can be healthy.
There is a way to balance a healthy lifestyle so that you can live your best and healthiest life in your older age. I believe that to find this balance, we need to become more mindful of what we are doing on a daily basis.
Here are a few things to try:
1. Exercise no more than 20 to 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Walking is just as good as going to the gym. So, why pay so much money for memberships to gyms. Instead, walk outside during the nice weather, and when you can walk outside, find other ways of exercising at home.
2. Live a more balanced and mindful life, where you can slow down and smell the roses. This is so important because for many of us, even when we retire, we end up doing so much every day. In essence, we have replaced our careers with another career.
3. Take time to enjoy every day of your life. Do at least one nice thing for yourself every day. Sew, crochet, play golf, read, or take a course. All of these things will help you enjoy the quality of your life.
4. Create a bucket list and do the things and start doing the things on your bucket list one at a time. If travel is on your bucket list, start budgeting and planning for these trips. Then when the time comes, go to these destinations and enjoy yourself.
By taking these steps you will be aging successfully. You will also be taking the time to enjoy life, because it goes so fast. Remember that we don't have forever. So, we should make every day count.

Why We Kettlebell
According to Pavel Tsatsouline, the author of many definitive books and videos on the subject of kettlebells and strength training, a Russian day well spent is as follows; Vodka at night, pickle juice in the morning (the best thing for a hangover). Throwing some kettlebells around between this hangover and the next one.
The kettlebell is one of the most simplistic looking pieces of exercise equipment you will ever lay your eyes on. Yet it is one of the most effective and versatile I have every had the pleasure of abusing myself with. It has been around for over 300 years and has been a staple of Russian strongmen for centuries. As the Soviet Weightlifting Yearbook published in 1986 put it, "It is had to find a sport that has deeper roots in the history of our people than the girevoy sport". (kettlebell sport)
So popular were kettlebells in Tsarist Russia that any strong man or weightlifter was referred to as a girevik, or "a kettlebell man". If you are knowledgeable about the history of the strongman and the many Olympic records set over the past 100 years, you know that the Russians are among the strongest people to ever walk the planet.
Soviet scientist discovered in the twentieth century what many hard living comrades had known for generations, that is, lifting kettlebells for reps is one of the best tool available for all around physical development and fitness.
The modern day kettlebell movement in this country can be attributed to one Pavel Tsatsouline, Master of Sports. In 2001 he was voted Rolling Stones Hot Trainer of the Year. He is a former Soviet Special Forces instructor and nationally ranked in the Russian ethnic sport of kettlebell lifting.
I first started studying Pavel's work in 2000 and was introduced to kettlebells in 2004. Before then I was mostly into bodybuilding type lifts with some powerlifting stuff thrown in for good measure. I had been lifting weights for 20 years at this point and had not experienced the results that I had hoped to by that time. Kettlebells and the philosophy that Pavel teaches changed my strength and conditioning life, and for that matter my everyday life forever. I'm hooked and I ain't ever going back to the way I used to train.
What the heck makes the kettlebell so effective I am often asked? How can this simple piece of iron with a handle be so darn effective at building strength and melting away fat with out the dishonor of aerobics? The short answer is the handle. The handle on a kettlebell makes it very versatile allowing you to perform the same lift from many different angles. Each variation changes the center of gravity of the bell and thus its effects on the body. There are several lifts that would not be practical or even possible without the kettlebell.
The other thing that make it so effective is the fact that when you learn to lift the kettlebell, you learn to utilize the body as a whole unit. This is how your body was designed to be used. For instance, the force used to drive a military press does not start in the shoulders or the arms, it starts in the toes and up the leg and the torso and into the bell. This make your workouts so much more effective in a relatively short period of time. I used to lift for 2 hours a day! Insane I was. I can get a workout that is many times more effective in 30 minutes or less with kettlebells.
The other advantage of a kettlebell is it's mobility. You can take it anywhere you go and get a quality whole body workout. The office, the backyard, the beach, the garage or anyplace your little old heart desires. NO EXCUSES now for not working out.
Incorporating kettlebells into my workouts has greatly increased my strength and conditioning levels. I have become more fit and flexible and my back has become like steel, resistant to injury. My chiropractor hasn't seen me in years. Sorry doc. My grip has become vice like and my shoulder health has been restored following an injury that plagued me with limited mobility in my left shoulder for years.
If you are not using a kettlebell and you are serious about your strength and conditioning or you are looking for a fun and effective way to shed some fat, get yourself a kettlebell and get to it. You will NOT be sorry.
Yours in Health,
Dennis

Ageing and Exercise
You do not have to fall apart as you get older - It is very possible to slow down or even hold back the ageing process. When we pass the age of 50, our bodies face a variety of anatomical and physiological changes. We can reverse or slow down these changes through regular physical activity.
Joseph Pilates Thinking and Exercises
Joseph Pilates said "the spine was the key to physical and emotional well-being. Neutral spine alignment is everything." He went on to say "If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young."
Pilates training develops deep core muscles in the back and abdomen to support the spine. Many people including myself, can adhere to his exercise system. It has true benefits to health as we grow older.
He was so ahead of his time. On a global scale, only over the last 25 years have we really taken onboard his ideas. His exercise system is the way forward for older people to enjoy later life. It can transform your all round mobility, strength, and posture well into your 80's and beyond.
If you take a look on YouTube at some footage of Joseph Pilates exercising in his later years, you can only be awe inspired by his physicality and mobility.
Neuromuscular Changes
- Less production of testosterone
- Muscle loss including fast-twitch muscle
- Connective tissues less elastic with age
After this, we lose around 10 oz of muscle mass every year. By around 70, men and women will face a 40% reduction in muscle mass. Sound scary?
This muscle loss is due partly to less production of testosterone. The loss of muscle also includes fast-twitch muscle fibres (muscles used for quick movement). The risk of falling in the elderly is linked to this combination of decreased fast-twitch muscle and overall muscle loss.
Connective tissue becomes less elastic with age too, which explains why many elderly people complain of muscle stiffness.
Resistance exercises for older people show sustained or increased muscle strength, elasticity and muscle mass.
Body Composition
As we get older, muscle mass reduces whilst body fat increases. As mentioned earlier, this decline in muscle mass is due to less production of testosterone. Because muscle uses more calories than fat, the combination of muscle loss and fat increase slows down your metabolic rate.
Aerobic and resistance training can increase the muscle mass. After resistance training, the muscles burn fat to re-build and strengthen themselves. This is where the fat loss occurs. Using these exercises stops the onset of weight gain in the form of fat.
Changes in diet can also enhance your body composition in the ageing process. Increased protein intake combined with reduced carbohydrates, will help maintain muscle mass and reduce body fat. Unless you reduce your calorie intake with age, you will naturally gain weight in the form of fat.
Body Posture
As we get older, our bodies weaken. Known as 'Kyphosis', the shoulders round and the head comes further forward.
Weight-bearing exercise or resistance training helps keep the skeletal and muscular system strong, thus preserving your back in the correct position for a good body posture.
Gait
This is the term used to describe how we walk. With age, the speed and stride length decreases. The pelvis can tilt and ankle movement can reduce.
- Core strength training keeps the abdominals strong which stops the pelvic tilt.
- Regular mobility exercises maintains good mobility in the ankles.
- Moderate aerobic exercise sustains good stride length and frequency.

5 Great Reasons to Use Resistance Bands
5 Great Reasons to use Resistance Bands
In the world of sport and exercise, you soon realize that success in these areas starts with consistency. If you want to see results from the exercises that you do or the sport you play you have to be consistent. That means not skipping out on training. With the jet-set lifestyle, we live nowadays it makes it hard to keep to any training plan. We can't carry our gym equipment around with us when traveling and there isn't always a gym available in some cases. That brings us to the first great reason for using them.
Reason #1:
Resistance bands are lightweight and can easily be pushed into a travel bag or even hand luggage. This means we can carry them when traveling. They are also very flexible and can be squeezed into any free space, so long as there are no sharp items to damage them.
Reason #2:
The intensity of a training session with resistance bands is limited only to your imagination. If it feels too easy you can increase the number of resistance bands you use. Almost every exercise that is performed and the way you set the resistance bands will cause you to engage your core muscles which will strengthen them.
Reason #3:
When using weights, you are always aware of gravity. The more weight that is lifted increases the risk in gravity winning that rep. When fatigue sets in and the weights are in an elevated position, gravity wins again. To work safely with weights it is a good practice to have a spotter. With resistance bands, gravity is far less a factor. If the resistance of the band is too great you can stop without gravity winning. A spotter is not a requirement when using this item.
Reason #4:
The environment that is needed has very little limits. The limit would be that you need somewhere to attach the bands on to something secure. This isn't for all exercises but there are many that you do need to attach one end of the band to a secure anchor. If there is a doorway with a door that closes your problem is solved. Another item you can attach the band to is a pole. The resistance band is extremely versatile. In almost any environment you can do; warm-up exercises, muscle resistance training, plyometric exercises, and cardio.
Reason #5:
They are comparatively inexpensive compared to weights. When using weights, if you want to increase the resistance, more weight must be purchased. With resistance bands, you can use a number of ways to increase the resistance. It's more economical to buy an extra band than to buy an extra weight. With a band, you can shorten the band to increase resistance or stand further away from the anchor point. Once again you are only limited by your own imagination.
These are 5 great reasons for trying resistance bands out. The versatility of this item makes it very popular for professionals and beginners in the sporting and exercise fields.

Do You Feel Older Than You Look?
Have you ever come across someone who looked much younger than their chronological age? We all did, and we certainly were impressed with it.
The common saying 'you are as old as you feel' rings true in the case of 68 years old women Jenny Darren who stunned the audience, and Simon, with her persona and the delivery of the Highway To Hell song Watch Jenny Here and defied the perception of aging. In spite of her white hair and not-so-firm body she exuded youth through her voice and her energy. She was confident and determined to succeed and she did. Not only that she was able to entertain the audience but she made everyone question the age factor and clearly understood that biological age is something we earn, we are in charge of and we can definitely reverse the course. How did she do it, and how can you do it too?
The scientists at NYU found that nearly 30% of aging is dictated by genetics but the remaining balance of 70% is due to a lifestyle. What does this mean to us now that we live so much longer? We can change the way we look and the way we feel because we are in control of it.
Many people associate hormonal fluctuations with teens and women but the truth is that people from all walks of life suffers the consequences of the hormonal roller coasters. But is it inevitable? Is there something you can do to help you body to stay in balance? Yes. There is a lot you can do and let's begin with focusing on one organ that is responsible for the jumps. It's the thyroid.
The thyroid is part of the endocrine system that utilizes iodine to produce, store and release into the bloodstream T3 and T4. These hormones regulate various bodily functions such as metabolism, circulation, nervous system and more. In effect the hormonal imbalance affect the body and in turn it impacts the skin.
The fact is that the healthier your lifestyle the less breakouts and stress you experience.
Let's talk about a balanced and a healthy diet and low sugar diet. From my experience the Mediterranean Diet is the smartest diet. You are not restricted and can eat the healthy fats but focus on low sugar intake. One of my friends who is nutritionist claims that "If the horses can eat grass and be strong and healthy why can't we?" He proposes a raw food diet by the means of juicing kale and broccoli while adding a fresh fruit and water. Keep it simple he says, there is no need to make it creamy by adding all sorts of possible hormonal disruptors form dairy or sugar from juice concentrates. Make sure to add healthy fats into your diet. Not only it moisturizes the skin but it is a fuel that helps the body work efficiently.
The skin suffers the consequences of a poor diet rich in carbs. Glycation is a natural process in which the sugar from your bloodstream attaches to proteins forming harmful molecules responsible for premature aging. The collagen as you know is made of proteins, the body hormones depend on a normal insulin level. When the stress level raises too frequently it can evoke a cascade of events leading to high blood pressure in addition to acne and wrinkles. That is exactly what I mean by focusing on wellness during my consultation with a client who comes for a skin care consultation or a skin care treatment.
What about the sun exposure and skin aging? Too much sun and unprotected skin will age prematurely and as a result the skin becomes fragile, wrinkles form with visible skin sagging beginning with the jaw line and onto the neck. It's been said that the longer we wear our skin the more effects the environment has on it. Apply your sunscreen!
As a skin care professional I am happy to say that we've come a long way from blaming the skin aging on our hormones and age to reversing the aging process naturally through phototherapy, peels, microdermabrasion and antioxidant rich skin care products. If you haven't seen our plant based products yet, you can do that here.
Living a healthy lifestyle means a lot of things to a lot of people, some realize that they need to include raw foods into their diet, others need to exercise more and many find that they need to find something they are passionate about, something that makes than happy. Whatever your lifestyle improvement needs are you'll benefit from knowing that it all start with a positive attitude and a smile!
